I just bought the wife a 2006 durango. 4.7l 2wd SLT 31000 miles. Sometimes at start up it will kick a big puff of smoke out of the exhaust. The first time i saw it i thought it was just condensation. I now think it may be oil or gas. Can't tell if it has more of a blue or gray tint to it. It is still under warranty and is going in this week. As anyone else had this problem? Would like to have an idea as to what it could be before the dealer gets a hold of it. Also, the front ac blows ice cold but the rear just blows hot air. Also going to have dealer fix that.

This is our first Durango. Are these good vehicles? I drive a 98 ram 1500 that has been perfect. I love my pick up that is why I bought the Durango for my wife.

Durango's are for sure good solid vehicles...only thing is that the shocks suck after a while.

 

The Durango is going to the dealership today. Since no one seems to know what is wrong I will let yall know what they come up with.

 

dealer called today. they ordered a part for the rear ac. They said they can not duplicate the smoking from exhaust.[:@] So now it looks like I will be taking it in all the time until they can figure it out. This is frustratinig as hell. we have only had the d for 6 weeks.

Be diligent and keep after the issue so it can be repaired on their dime. The issue you seem to be having is rare for such a low mileage vehicle. If you had a bunch of miles, I would say valve seals or possibly a head gasket.

How many times has it happened, and when?? First start of the day, or after you have run for awhile? Remember that quite a bit of water is produced by a combustion engine. This is why exhaust systems of old would rust from the inside out.

As you might know, blue smoke would be oil, and white can be water vapor which is normal in small to moderate quantities.

If you are seeing this upon startup only, I would not be too concerned as long as the smoke is white.

it is going back to the dealer tomorrow. Wife said today after work, she drove to a friends house about 5 miles from work. Talked to her friend for 10 mins with d running. When she left the friends house it wouldn't shift gears and then puffed out whitish gray smoke. Her friend said it looked like it was on fire there was so much smoke. Other than taking it back ever week is there anything else i can do to get them to take care of this?

 

if its still under warranty keep taking it back, save all your tickets. Sometimes if problem comes back after warranty is over you can still get it fixxed for free. Keep all documentation, service, warranty, etc.

got it back from dealer. they still find nothing wrong with it. We have had it back for 2 weeks now and it hasn't smoked again that we have seen. Still runs and drives perfectly.

have the 100k extended warranty so will just wait for it to break so they will have something to fix. I hate arrogant service writers. they think everyone who comes in is an idiot.

 

Sorry, forgot to post after we finally got this fixed. I had taken it back several times, dealership never could get it to smoke for them. It finally started running rough and triggered the CEL. Took it to dealer, code was for misfires. Changed plugs and coil packs. Ran perfect, but they couldn't find smoke. Lucky for me when I went to pick it up, it smoked when I started it. The service manager sent me home in a rental and kept the truck. Called me the next day, said it was the pcv valve. It was sticking and sucking oil into the intake when the truck was shut off. The replaced the pcv valve for free, i guess since it had been such a simple problem that none of us thought of. Have had it back for over a year now and no smoke. Of all the cars I have owned or worked on I have never seen a pcv valve do that. Live and learn I guess.
