Keep us posted on your project. Hopefully you can find some competent folks to do the job for a reasonable fee.
FYI, you might want to keep an eye on Ebay. Fairly often, you can find the complete kit that includes everything to make the switch for the rear axle for a really good price.

Thanks for checking in. There are no Dodge dealers in my area who want to do the job. Two recommended against it because of "computer" problems and the other was the $3300 quote. One of the 4x4 shops that seem to know what they are doing believes it will not be a problem and at most would have to change the set points for shifting. Their quote is $1800. I did locate a new 2008 Limited D with all the other options I currently have and was seriously considering the purchase until I realized how upside down I would be. I had no idea the a two year old D would loose that much value. Back to considering having the 4x4 shop do the switch but may tow the travel trailer a short distance first and seen what it feels like with the 3.55 gears.

What a bunch of crap!!!! I can't believe you can't find a dealer that is comfortable with this work.
Since the 3.92 gear is an option, common sense dictates that they would have made the D such that a dealer could make the switch on site if the customer wants a D already on the lot, but with the 3.92's.
I would get some references on your local 4x4 shops from the crowd that does business there. That way you can make an educated choice.
On the upside down comment, I don't think any of us thought that a vehicle stickering for what these do new could drop so much in the first 2 years.
I bought my 01 in 03 for 19k w/25k on the clock. The original owners paid 32k.
That alone is quite a hit for 2 years, and also before the gas prices went to crap!!!.
