Default 05 Limited V8 Stalls

All,

I have a 2005 Limited Durango V8 with 36000 miles on it. For the past 2 years it has been stalling when I try to turn.

I have taken the car to the dealer numerous times, which they assure me everything looks fine and upload a new program to the car.

This past week, I took it to the dealer and they claim it is related to the key FOBs, which he insists need to be replaced. They updated the programming again, but this past weekend, the car stalled in the middle of a very busy intersection and a couple of other times as well.

Should I go ahead with the key replacement?

I am so fed up, and more so now since it is no longer under warranty.

A few things to ponder......

#1. Although you might have 1 bad remote, I find it hard to fathom that both are bad. I feel that your issue lies elsewhere.

#2. Even though you are past the 36k mark, your 05 Durango also came with a 7year/70k powertrain warranty. While it is possible that the root cause is not powertrain related, if it is the most you would have to pay is $100.

#3. The TSB regarding uploading new software is well known. Also, there is the possibility that you are actually having a transmission issue which can also cause stalling. Have you have the tranny filter/fluid changed recently???

Could also be your BCM or body control module that runs the security system as well as a plethora of other crap.

In the Gen 1's, this item was called a CTM or Central Timer Module, and they seem to die like clockwork in the 60-70k range to the tune of ~$400 or so.

I had mine replaced back in April of this year at 69k.

Don,

Thanks for the response. I haven't had the transmission fluid changed, that I can remember (unless its part of the 30k vehicle checkup).

It has been happening for two years now and even with a replaced key. I haven't ever heard of transmission fluid causing a stall on a vehicle that isn't that old (mileage wise).

Do these keys go out this frequently? Seems like a quality/control issue.

IIRC:
The remote issue I know about was more about the keyless entry not working due to the battery connections being poorly soldered.

As far as the fluid causing stalling, it has to do with the filter not being properly seated into the tranny, and allowing the sytem to suck air which is not a good thing.

BTW: Since this issue has been ongoing for two years, you should have plenty of history that the issue was not cured during the warranty period. Due to that, they should continue to find and cure the problem at not cost to you!!!!!!

Well, I bring it in to the service dept tomorrow AM. He still thinks it has to do with a 'shim.' He claims that if a key's circuit board is malfunctioning, it can cause the car to disable itself.

I will ask about the transmission filter and see what he has to say.

I sure hope they don't push back, due to the warranty issue.

CKG;

Given the history during the warranty period, they should bring this issue to a resolution at no cost to you.

You might also have a PCM on the way out. it is covered by a federal 8 year 80k warranty, so there again no charge to you.

Be polite but firm, and be prepared to involve the district rep if they refuse to assist you further.

Wanted to bring you up to date with my issue.

They found a fault in the AIS motor and replaced it for free. Our service guy called Dodge and they OKed the warranty repair. So far, so good.

Does that sound like something that could cause a stall?

CKG:

Not sure what they are calling an AIS motor. Sounds like it could be the Idle Air Control which could cause driveability and idle issues if its not working properly.

Glad the repair was at no charge. Thats the way it should be!!!!!!
