You missed a point my friend ... MOPAR 160 amp alternator from the factory.

I had a chance to get one that a guy ordered directly from DODGE but wouldn't fit his Jeep (which it wouldn't anyway) so he was selling it. It WAS a factory option on the 5.9L Durango for a time for police and emergency services.

That link was for a rebuilt 160amp of an original OEM Mopar 160 amp alternator that was made for the Durango.

Why a truck guy has to school the SUV room is beyond me, although this thread should have been posted to the 1st gen board since the option was for 2001-2003.

 

If you have the specs I would be interested to see "police" package on the 1 gen durango. To the best of my knowledge a "police package" was minor exhaust, emissions, suspension, and CPU tuning. Well for that matter, 2nd gen as well.

As far as a 160amp alt, I only show 160amp factory option with the Hemi.

Your best bet is to spend a couple hundred bucks on a OHIO GEN. Odds are if you need the alt for a stereo, you probably don't need all of the amps you think you do.

One: I went to my local Dodge dealer and asked them to look up the 160amp alternator for the 2001-2003 Durango with the 5.9L V8. They have it listed for $304.

Two: I asked one of my friends who owns a parts store to look up a 160amp alternator for the 2001-2003 Durango with the 5.9L V8. He has one listed, rebuilt, for $199 + $50 core charge for the returned original 160amp alternator.

I really don't know how much more information I need to post here to indeed prove that it was available from the factory. And, btw, it's a drop-in replacement on my 5.2L V8 Ram PU.

Like I said, full tilt cranked up my new system can pull 145amps at thump level.

Anyway, I hope maybe you Durango folks have learned something here.

Yes there was a stocker 160 for the 2001+.

Aftermarket is another issue. No problems there perse, just not a Mopar part.

OK, my one bad was not specifying 2001-2003 which was left out of my original post so maybe that led to some confusion ... well maybe I had a second bad by posting to the wrong "generation" forum but like I said I don't know Durangos except that the latest incarnation to me looks a lot like old Ford Granadas :O.

BUT, if anyone ever needs or wants a factory MOPAR HO Alternator to fit a 5.9 or a 5.2, whether it be a Durango or a Ram, that will just drop in slicker than snot on a doorknob we now know THERE IS ONE, lol.

I'm going back over to the truck forum now, I think I've caused enough trouble here ... my job is done.

Since there is no stocker 160 for the 2000-, if you are going aftermarket anyway, I would recommend Ohio Generator for your needs.

EDIT: OK, I checked out the website for OG and it didn't say much specifically about it's products. Is it strictly a two alternator conversion or do they have single HO alternators? If they do I bet they're about $700+.

 

Call in and talk to the guys at OhioGen and negotiate. You could probably get the alt you need for around $400-500 or less. Well worth the money. The next thing you need to do for your "thumps" is get a good battery. I gain almost 5db in Durango just by switching to a Optima. I was running O gauge into distribution blocks 4 gauge out and had a JBL 600.4 for mids and highs and a JBL 2200.1 pushing my JL 12w7s

I have pretty much the same wiring set-up as you do, 1/0g split to 4g, 4g grounds from amps/cap, 1/0g grounds from battery and strap. I was going to go with Optima but my friend the parts guy didn't recommend it, so I contacted a tech rep at Interstate, we emailed back and forth about the details of my install and he too steered me away from the Optima and recommended the MTP-27F so I went with that. The posts are reversed but it isn't a problem.

My slightly modified from before install:

2 ~ Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1 12" subs
Kappa 60.7cs components up front
Kappa 50.7cs components in the back
Infinity Reference 1211a amp for the subs
Infinity Reference 7541a amp for the other 4 channels
Stinger SPC505 5 Farad Hybrid Super Capacitor
Alpine DVA-9861 head unit

Basically I've just added the cap, upgraded all of my wiring from my previous upgrade from factory wiring and am replacing the battery.
