Default Oil is gone!

I've never had a car do this without some type of simptom.

I went to check my oil this morning and the dip stick was bone dry! Its only been maybe 4 months since I changed it with Syntec. No leaks, spots in the driveway or burning off in the exhaust either. I dont get it. The engine had a very slight knock but I figured it was just some bad gas. My old gen Durango used to get sludged up like hell but never did it just burn through it like this.

Is this common in these engines (4.7)? I did drive quite a few miles including a trip into the mountains but nothing too extreme. It just seems odd to have no oil in the crank case without a simptom or CEL.
Anyone else have problems with oil consumption like this in the Durango???

As you can see, Im new to the site so thanks for any opinions in advance.

Did you check to see if the oil plug is still there and on tightly? A car without oil will not run long at all and hopefully you caught it before it did any damage to the engine. I would go a reputable shop to have them diagnose the problem,

Theres no such thing as long as you use a good quality oil and good change intervals. There is a TSB on the older 4.7's but that was fixed on the new style. It was a bad breather. There COULD be some water vapor caused by this TSB in the oil filler but thats it. Fully Synthetics hove more detergents in them as well as other modifiers but you have to use a REAL GOOD Fully Synthetic oil like Mobil 1. I know that Mobil 1 ACTUALLY brakes the molecules down to 2 but as the courts stated a oil company can also use production TIME in the brake down process and still call it a Fully Synthetic.

Now if I had a 4.7L and mechanically understanding the issues first hand, I would use Mobil 1, 10W-30 Fully Synthetic High Mileage as my oil of choice. As for your issue, it sounds like there wasn't enough oil installed and blow by is the culprit. Change the PVC valve and try the oil I mentioned and use a OEM (Mopar)oil filter. Both are available at Wal-mart for like $30 all together. (You can get a 5 quart container of it for like $25 and the filter is like $5!). This lubricant is built for this type of issues. I would change it out at 5000 mile intervals or before.

Thank you so much. Fantastic info. I will take your advice and switch to the Mobil one next weekend. I went ahead and just changed it out with the autozone 10 30 crap that was on sale. I did this hoping that I would get some good advice on the brand and type that was best for this truck. Im just going to run this cheap stuff for a few days and use it kind of like an engine flush to help rinse any debris or old oil down and out. I've been a member of the ModdedMustangs site for years but never joined another site for my other cars. I like what I see here so far. Its great to see lots of traffic in the tech sections.

Thanks again...
