Default Please help, 06' Durango P2074 code and dieing issues.

Hi folks. I've searched this site, but I can't find a solution to my wife's durango's problem.

It's a 4.7L with 77,000 miles. It dies while driving, then the Check Engine Light comes on, and it sets a P2074 code. The TPS range is .67 to 3.75. Its idle bounces from 400rpm to around 750rpm. When it dies, it restarts easily.

I've cleaned the intake of the Throttle Body with carb cleaner and a rag, it was dirty, and I disconnected the battery, and it was better for a few days, but now it's doing it again.

The idle has been fluctuating intermittently for a couple of months. Last week was the first time that it died. Yesterday we were driving about 25mph when it died, I went to nuetral and restarted, went about 100 feet and it died at the red light. Restarted it, and when I went to take off the tach went to 2,000rpm before it started to take off, then it took off all at once, like a jack rabbit start.

Do I need to replace the TPS?

The 2,000rpm thing has happened only the one time. My first thought when that happened was the torque converter. I haven't scanned it since that happened because I don't own a scanner, so I have to go borrow a friend's.

I've tried to be thorough in my description. If you need more information, just ask. I hope someone here can help me.

Thanks you in advance,
Gil & Mollie

The throttle position sensor may be shot. Also, I would have it tuned up as the plugs need replaced at 30.000 miles. Auto zone can pull codes for free or a small fee,

Thanks for the fast reply.

Yes, I agree. I failed to mention that. She and I were just recently married and she said that the plugs had never been changed. She is the original owner.

I was going to change them the other day, but I didn't have an extension here that was long enough, so I have to bring one home from work tomorrow. I was going to change the air filter as well. I haven't checked it, but I figure a new filter can't hurt. But I'm hoping that the new plugs will fix it. But because I've never owned a Durango before, and this is new to me, I'm seeking advice here.

I had that same problem before and I had my spark plugs changed and some of my ignition coils because they were damaged.

No, the new plugs didn't fix it, but boy were they worn out! The center electrode was worn all the way down to the insulator! In my defense, we were just recently married, LOL!

My problem was the Throttle Position Sensor. $34 at Autozone. It runs great, idles great, and has much better throttle response. BTW, the air filter was as clean as new.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I too am having p 2014 issues. No mod.just replaced head gaskets and oxy bank 2 sensors as well as air filter chased vacuum leaks new plugs new cooling system. The earliest ever worked on 1994 f150. Did all from a book. All came together great. Kept time double checked it as well as everything above. Got up to 65 and it started to cut out and died. Next day changed cam sensor P 0016. Now 2074 still after all new sensors. Won't idle foot to floor to get started. Now p c m is what's left no money to pay for more cap that won't fix it. I escort wide loads and need truck to eat. Hhhhelp.

05 4.7 1500 ram. Just had truck 7 weeks in that time I've changed the oil,new oxygen sensors, new plugs, mileage dropped. Drive it all over the country chasing wideloads. Water Pump failed. Replaced. Blew radiator. Replaced. Blew head gaskets. Replaced. New oilchange. Started on first try. Ran high at 1500 or so r p m found vacuum line off so hooked it up. Ran 500 rim left for home then cut out died. Coded p 0016 changed cam sensor. Coded 2074 new t p's sensor, new map sensors. Looked all over and over for more vacuum leaks. Nothing found. Still have to pump throttle to start and feather it to keep it running. Rough idle and won't idle. Throttling it has a flutter sound as it all plugs aren't hitting. Can't r are it to coder won't run well enough. P c m left to change but doubt it is the problem. Has 189000 miles. Help me I have to get back to work. Please and thank you

jramsey,
This is the Durango section, not the Ram section.

My 04 LTD Durango 5.7 also has this issue of dieing out. I had it towed the next day and come to find out that the vehicle started with no problems at the dealer. The day it died out though, it would not start. Strange how things happen however I did have a code regarding the EGR valve which I had replaced. I was advised that the EGR wouldn't cause the vehicle to die out. IDK? Further this morning my vehicle had died on me once again about 5ft from leaving out my yard. I constantly turned it off and tried to restart. It did not start until an attempt to press the pedal while turning the key. I idled the car and then took off for work. Luckily I made it and hoping that it will start later today so I can get home. On another note I noticed idle issues while at a stop as if its slightly gasping for fuel. All in all it seems Im having the issues common to our generation Durangos. This thread is helpful and now I will look into the TPS and a tune up. Thanks everyone!!!
