Exclamation Help! Rear pinion seal.

Well I have a 2004 Dodge durango, SLT 4.7. It has 103000 kms on it. It has been a gem until..... Friday I was driving on the highway. Oh I just had my fluids changed 3 months ago. I arrived at my job and smelt a burning chemical smell? LOL thaught it was the mill next door. After work got in the truck and drove 15minutes to get gas. Got out smelled it again. Looked under neath and noticed fluid. Rear end fluid. My exact words f&^K. I drove 45 seconds to a very well established local mechanic. He jacked her up and said it was a pinion seal. There was rear end fluid leaking out. He poured some in and it cam right out. He said if I didn't hear a noise I should be ok. I picked up the seal and he is putting it in tomorrow. Question----- should my rearend be ok after he puts the seal in?

Thanks for any help I am worried. Oh also does anyone know the general warranty on a 2004 durango for this stuff.

I would think that it would be alright as long as the mechanic is competent. I had to change my rear main seal on my Demon atleast three times in the last year. As long as you catch it, no harm to the drivetrain,

Question Why does it happen?

Here is a silly question.... Is your demon you are referring to a Durango? Why would it happen 3 times?

Sorry, my 1971 Dodge Demon is not my Dodge Durango. I was trying to convey that no matter who does the work, sometimes a bad design will always fail. The rear main seals on 'A' body cars (Demons, Darts, Dusters, early Barracudas) are notorious for failing, but the Durango seems to be a very toughly built truck,

Thanks. I understand now. What causes these darn things to fail. Can the mechanic replace the new seal I baught or does the crush sleeve and other things need fixin too?
Thanks you are a huge help.

Seals will need replaced perodically with age. 103,000 kms may be early, but hopefully it will never need repalced again,

Default rear pinion

i have a 2003 ram 1500 also with the 4.7.I also had the rear pinion seal go out on mine. I did not realize it right away until there was a small puddle under my rear end, i got it serviced right away and is fine. i have put roughly 8k on since and still Aok. As long as your truck was equipped with the right fluid and the special recomended mopar additive it will be just fine.
