2008 Transmission, done?
08 Durango/58,000 miles was having trouble shifting into reverse smoothly over the past few weeks, so I took it to the local mechanic and he ran tests and said my gear ratios were off, so I had it brought to the local Dodge dealership. They said Reverse was done, and it would be $2400 to fix it, and the area surrounding it that it caused damages to, or $3400 for a whole new tranny.
Just wanted to know if this was a common problem, if the prices sounded right and if I would be better off fixing the one gear or replacing the whole transmission?
Many Thanks,
Kate

No not common. Should be under warranty.
Was it purchased used and how many miles are on it? If high miles, what is the service history.
Not knowing, my bet is super high miles for the year, was a used purchase thus no warranty and it was never serviced, worn out and traded away. If correct, time for that new tranny. Sorry. Always service all major components as soon as you purchase a used vehicle. Factor in the costs of doing so to the purchase price to determine if buying used was a good idea/a good price.

The 545rfe is a pretty tough trans, so it is usual for such problems at such a low mileage.
As mentioned, hopefully some type of warranty was provided with the car when you got it.
In the event that you do have the work done, my recommendation would be get a complete rebuild. That way, you will have a warranty and the extra bucks to do it right are not that much more.
It would not hurt to shop around as well and see what kind of quotes you get. Since you now know the trans model, the shop should be able to give you a fairly accurate quote.
