Default Rear hatch won't stay open

I have a 2007 Durango Limited Ed. We purchesed it used. It now has 54000 miles on it. today the rear hatch will not stay open. It has entry through the key fob and interior button. When using the button or fob the hatch will open like it is supposed to, all the way, then automatically start to close. When opening it manually, it will not remain open, you have to hold it open. Anyone have a suggestion on the problem and even better how to fix it?

The motor may be at fault as it will reverse if it comes into contact with something,

Does it 'beep' before t reverses? Mine will 'beep' three or four times when opening or closing,

Yes, It beeps the entire time. It acts like it is going to open gets about 3 in from the top. Bounces up the last 3 in then starts shutting slowly, beeping the entire time.
