Default Torque Converter going bad?

Took my Durango to get the transmission fluid/filter changed. The shop is one of the national names. Got a call after a while and the manager told me the following.

When they dropped the pan there was more metal shavings than they see normally. Said they hooked up a computer for any codes and found none. They test drove it and it was fine.

Manager says he things the torque converter may be the cause of the shavings and he is concerned that it may be going bad. Says he has seen a lot of Chrysler products with bad torque converters.

Of course he wants to drop the whole transmission and inspect everything. Quoted around $950 to install a new torque converter and said to do a full transmission service would be several thousand.

The Durango has 68k miles on it and I am the second owner. I do not know if the previous owner ever had the fluid changed. If not could one expect to see some metal in the fluid? He did not say it was large pieces or chunks.

Has always run fine to me. The only thing I have ever noticed is that when you first start the car and put it into gear it will not move on its own. You have to apply gas and then it will go. I have never owned a vehicle this large so i dont know if that is normal. And that is usally first thing in the morning...if it happens.

I tow a 16 foot center console but not often. Maybe twice a month and its only 100-120 miles round trip.

Thanks for any advice

2005 Durango 5.7L Hemi 4x4 68k miles.

Welcome to DF
If you have no codes and the transmission is shifting fine. Leave it along. The problem with shops like the national chain names, How do you know if they are doing the repairs. All they need to say is, we need to order the torque converter and it be here the next day. Then you get a call on the 2nd day, saying the repair is done. How do you know if they replaced the torque converter?
