2004 Durango 5.7 transmission question
Unfortunately, I had to replace the engine at 103,000 due to what appeared to be a hydro-lock issue in cylinder number 5. The intake manifold appeared to be holding moisture as there was water in it when I removed it. Anyways, I did the engine swap with the help of a friend. When we pulled the engine, I removed the trans coolant lines and the torque convertor. So, I lost whatever fluid was there. After everything was installed, I added what I thought was enough trns fluid back into it. We have been driving it for about 5 months now. Now that it is cold, it will stall every morning when I get to the stop sign 1 mile down the street. It always refires and never stalls again until the next morning. So, I gathered that the trans was low on fluid causing the torque convertor to go crazy and the engine stalls. That is until the fluid warms up and circulates enough to not stall anymore. I drove it home 40 miles today and checked the level right away. It registered right around the lower two holes. I added half quart and the level seemed to go just above the second bottom hole. I added another quart and a half and the level didn't seem to move. I was on level ground, in neutral, ran through all gears and even drove it an additional 15 miles to make sure it was planty warm. I am getting fluid clear up the dipstick but only on one side. I can also see fluid on both sides just after the two top holes, but there is no fluid on either side from the bottom holes to the top holes. So I am thinking that I still need to add more fluid. I am just afraid to overfill and cause major problems. Should I have seen the level move at all after adding two quarts if it was originally at the two bottom holes? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry to hear of your Hemi's demise. Several folks including me have had their 5.7 motor replaced due to valve train issues or rod/piston issues where the rod ends up going through the side of the block.
If you have not serviced your trans lately, you might consider doing a drain/refill and filter change. You will need around 7 quarts of either OEM or Valvoline ATF+4.
What fluid did you go back in with after the engine change? I have heard of some stalling issues with the 5.7. Some were addressed by a computer update, and others were due to the trans filter not being installed correctly. You could check this when you do the service.

Thanks Don. Ya, I put Mopar fluid back in it after the swap. I feel like I am on the right track especially after discovering it was low on fluid. I just don't want to overfill. If I can get it filled up correctly and the stalling quits, I will be doing the trans filter right away. The filter has never been changed
so I don't think it is installed incorrectly.
