Default '05 Durango Towing Capacity

I have 2005 Durango SLT with the 4.7L V8. I looked up the towing capacity and I believe it is shown as 5500lbs. My questions is the ability to tow a 20'5" Bass Boat. If I had the HEMI, I would not even question the ability.

Roughly, I believe the boat, motor and trailer are roughly 3200lbs. to 3500lbs. This seems to be within the towing capacity of the vehicle, however, I live in Arizona and plan on towing throughout the West. There are some fairly decent mountain grades that I may have to go up or down and I just don't know about the capability of the truck.

The trailer will be a tandem axel trailer with brakes so that will help. However, I will be adding weight with required equipment within the boat, tackle in the boat and spare tackle and clothing in the back of the truck. Does anyone know for sure if this truck will be able to handle what I am wanting it to do?

I towed my 18 Stratos all over New England and never had a problem with my 2004 4.7. Bass boats tow very easily, hook up a 3000lb enclosed trailer and its night and day. Do you have factory sized tires? Also that 5500 is with 3:55 gears its over 7 with 3:92's

You do have the factory tow package/hitch/

If you want to add a few ponies throw a flowmaster American Thunder 17400 kit on it and a K &N CAI. They make a very noticable improvment in power and MPG. I have a complete K&N kit for yours in excellent shape if your interested.

I appreciate the responses! Bass boats do tow easily and I understand the box trailer reference. When we moved West from the Midwest I had a U-Haul trailer and it was a pain.

The vehicle does have the factory towing package and standard tires, however, I am thinking of eventually getting a leveling kit (since I can not find a lift for it) and larger tires (33's).

I may be interested in the Flowmaster package that you have. If not immediately, in the near future! Stopped in today to look at some boats again and really liked the 21', but the Skeeter FX20 will probably be the beast!

Going to heavy 33" tires will hurt how your Durango tows. I run 22" srt wheels that are 31.6" they effectively drop the rear end gear ratio to around 3.27:1 33" will be around 3.08's Now for example, if you had the 3.92 gears your Durango could tow 7500lbs with the 3.55 you can tow 5500. 3.08 would be around 3500. You will Die in the hills hauling 4000lbs the trannie will never like the gear its in. I noticed a huge differnce in how it towed, if you had the 5.7 maybe! but never with a 4.7 go to 33" and tow.

Great information! I appreciate it!

I do a bunch of back country bow hunting, that is why I was thinking of going larger on the tires. If it will affect the towing, forget it! I think I will be staying with the standard tires and keeping my towing efficency up!

Thanks again!
