Angry Transmission Problems???

I need some help with a problem on my 2005 Durango! This is what happened to me today:

Drove down my street and turned into my (long) driveway when the engine made a whining noise and the car lost all of it's power. I barely rolled up in front of my garage. Now the car acts like it is in neutral! It starts fine but makes a whining noise and the shifter shifts just fine but the car won't move. Tried to shift in D,R,1&2 but nothing happens.

No warning lights came on and I need to know what to expect before calling the tow truck tomorrow to have it towed to the shop.

Any input would be appreciated! I found several posts in other forums where owners describe dthe same problem but no answers were posted.

check fluid level in neutral and if it reads overfull, then you may have a restricted filter...however restricted filters usually occur when something comes apart and stops it up....

BD:

How many miles on your D and which engine? If you are under 70k miles and have the 7/70 power train warranty in effect, your dealer will pay the tow and repair it for $100!

These symptoms are classic of a failed torque convertor. The 05 D we have at work did the same thing at 62k miles, and a new TC was the ticket.

Hi Mario:

Lots of driveline related things can give you a vibration.
At 120K, you could have a wheel bearing or U joint on its way out.

Also, a tire out of balance as well as a broken (or breaking) belt in the tire could cause this also.

Please describe in more detail when and how this vibration is presenting itself?

I would guess the whining sound maybe your torque converter and pump. Buy any chance do you have a 4x4 transmission? Maybe the transfer case is in neutral.

The best way I can describe it, is before it vibrates the rpm gauge drops and then it. Vibrates but it's a strong vibration almost like if something was about to fall off. I've check u-joints and they are fine and I've heard alot about these torque converts going out, fluid is fine also. I really don't know any other way to describe it
