Question Factory "Chrome Clad" wheel question

My Durango Linited came with the optional chrome clad wheels. This appears to be some sort of plastic skin that was attached over a normal wheel--it's not an actual chromed alloy wheel. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever tried to remove the skin and what is underneath? A standard alloy wheel, or a steel one like the spare?

I would think it is steel as that is cheaper than a cast alloy wheel,

No its aluminum and while the cover can be removed they are epoxied on. The have a rough cast finish wiht some machined areas.

It would look nicer to polish the aluminum than to have that plastic ABS 'chrome" plastic pasted onto it. My wifes Suburban has a set of nice polished wheels on it from the factory,

can the chrome cover be replaced? the dealer over torqued the lug nuts and now there are cracks forming in the plastic.

Over torqueing the lugs will not due that. The lugs nuts do not touch the plastic.

They damaged them some other way. Tire to rim installer possibly. Lug nut sockets to thick. I have always heard they CANT just replace the plastic. Being the dealer did it they can replace the entire rim for you.

Default Painting

Mine are horrible..as is pitting and peeling(outer coating)! Is it possible to paint these aluminum rims or are they cast alloy? They are stock wheels on my 04 hemi durango. I was thinking either flat or matt finnish black. What do all you think?

There are guys in here that have remove the cover and it's a pain in the butt and a lot of work, so my suggestion is for you to get aftermarket wheels!

I got a nice set of chrome PLATED wheels for $200.00 a piece on clearance from Tirerack three years ago. Sold the chrome clad wheels for $100.00 a piece as they were junk after one winter,

Default clad "cover" gone!

yesterday Just had one of my covers on my 2007 durango limited disappear. Looks like HECK!, and seems like it was glued on so even if I find it on the road somewhere dont think it can go back on. Going to have to buy a whole new rim? What would cause the glue/whatever to fail that it would fall off in the first place???
