Smoke:

Your MPG numbers are pretty much inline with what I was getting from my 01 4.7.

Of all the wonderful things our Durango's can do, the one thing they can't do is sip fuel.

Remember that your Gen 1 D has a full frame, and weighs in at roughly 4800 pounds. Add with that the aerodynamics of a barn door, and 13 mpg city and 18 hwy is what you will get.

No matter that we do, we still have not figured out a way to overcome the laws of physics.

It takes horsepower and torque to do work. Not trying to be flippant, but those of us with SUV's did not buy them for their mileage.

dont trust the overhead mpg they lie, check how many miles at fill up and calculate at next fill up miles to how many gallons it takes to fill up your D

My overhead is extremely accurate. It tells me I average at about 10.5 to 11 and when I hand calculate it, I come up with 10.5. All you can do is granny pedal it or add a MIT (Modular Intake Tube) like what I did on my D. I didn't buy the AiRaid because thats a scam. All it is is a plastic pipe that goes to the throttle body. I got about 2mpg gain city and about 3 mpg highway.

All I used were a couple 3" steel hose clamps and a 3" Spectre Flexable Intake Tube. It really made the 287 growl at 2500 to 3500 RPM too.

just to let you know air flow better through a smooth tube than a flex tube with ridges

Do you think I didn't know that? If you think I'm stupid enough to buy a $300 tube from AiRaid then you are completely loony.

I have a very cheap help for increasing MPG on my stock 5.7 Hemi..it has got my hemi purrin as well. Iam getting about 15-15.5 mpg in city and 21-22 hwy. I have 85,000 miles on it and is runnin great. Not the greatest mpg..but for these beasts its pretty good. The great thing is you can purchase it at Walmart for cheap or any automotive store. Found this info on a similiar website about increasing mpgs using an addittive..anyone else using an additive?

I havent used an additive in any of my cars but an explorer that i had with ticking valves, It was Lucas Oil Stabilizer. If you want you can add Royal Purple to everything and thatll give you more power, not sure about MPG.

I use Seafoam after every oil change in the gas tank when it is near empty. I then follow the next tank with Marvel Mystery oil,

Default Response to bad mileage

I've come to the conclusion that driving the 5.7H will not generate good gas mileage if your a lead foot. Having said that, I've been doing the economical driving of mild accel, cruise at 67. That's been getting me 20.88mpg on the highway. I don't want to know what I get city (it will only bum me out).

Having said that, I'm in the process of putting a HHO generator in the vehicle w/ the aspiration of getting another couple of MPG. I will report on this in the near future.

Since I've been able to control some of my BAD driving habits, I've started saving money in fuel economy. Good luck to everyone on that!

David
