I think the Tundra is an ugly looking vehicle, but to each their own. Plenty of power.

Just don't try to off road it. Lots of bed rub against the cab and various other things that make it less than ideal for that.

Unhappy 2007 durango knocking

has 105,000 2007 durango just dished out $850 for a tune up
Week latter knocking!!
5.7 hemi
Few days after tune up noticed oil light coming on, topped it off and fine, few days latter its back and seems to be coming on over 2000rpm
Drove about 30 clicks out of town and noticed a ticking noise, returned to local garage heavy ticking
Told is a double click
Garage hooks it up and codes at P3497 #07E8 CYLINDER DEACTIVATION SYSTEM BANK 2
Spark plugs pulled on 2 and are ok
Runs code and told that its an issue with a possible cylinder sticking that will not allow it to go from the 8 cylinder run to a 4.
Now told to take to dealership as all heads need to be removed, arms replaced.
Could it be something else?
This thing has been babied BIG TIME, and not looking forward to a big bill
seems to be a lot of similar issues via forums

Bill:

Sorry to hear of the issues you are having.

Gotta ask you though, what heck did the the dealer do for an $850 "tune up?"

They are getting $250-$300 to replace the Hemi's 16 plugs, and there is not a whole lot more than that to a tune up.

Did they flush coolant, or drain and refill trans and T case? The differentials should be drained and refilled as well.

Thumbs down

Code check $20
EGR VALVE $99.27
SPARK PLUG G POWER $112.64
SPARK PLUG BOOT (COIL TO PLUG) $118.88
REPLACE PLUGS WIRES ($101 HOUR 3.5) $353.50

DURANGO IS AT DEALERSHIP AWAITING WORD THE ARE REMOVING HEADS TODAY, FROM WANT IM TOLD BY OTHERS COULD BE A PUSHROD

Still I'm pissed, this thing has been babied huge 5,000 clicks over warranty, no warning...just returning home doing about 90km and bang, bang, bag
Over-looking other forums VERY similar issues...very bad taste right now with dodge
Paid $51,000 for this in 2007

Good point by Mike. Makes me wonder if they put the correct 20w oil back in when the oil service was done.

Since my D does not have the MDS, I don't know what extra hardware they added to make it work.

One would hope that repairing it would not require removal of the heads. The early Hemi's did have valve spring issues. I hope they took a good look there for obvious signs of damage before pulling the heads.

I agree 100% that if you have treated it well, no way such major issues should be present at this mileage.

Please keep us posted so we know what the remedy is. Hopefully this will not be another boondoggle like the 04-05 collapsing valve springs that destroyed quite a few Hemi's including mine.

I know this will be hard to believe but our 2004 Durango 5.7 Hemi just blew up in the drive-way. 119,356 miles so I guess we were lucky. Has anyone used Power Train Products for a replacement engine? They seem to have the best warranty.

Default Durango Death Knock

A friend of mine used them for a Ram p/u motor, seemed like a smooth transaction and has ran fine for a year now. I am not sure what your Durango (?) did but mine threw a rod and punched a baseball sized hole in the block 2 weeks ago. Vehicle ran perfect all day then the next morning went to start it and wham! Once the death knock started I had it towed to my shop. I did not see any oil leak or the hole till the other day, I started taking the top end off hoping I may find a bad valve and when I went to drop the exhaust off there it was, right above the starter, partially hidden from sight. It may not do any good but a have a call into Chrysler for some assistance...we will see. Mine has 80K on a 2004 and I own a repair shop so I know mine was taken care of! If I hear anything I can let you know.

Carko:

Sorry to hear this about your D. Please keep us posted as to whether or not Chrysler helps you at all.

What was the build date on your D? My 04 died at 39K, and thankfully was covered by the 7/70 warranty for the original owner. It was built in January of 04.
In my D's case, it was a collapsed valve spring on cyl #3 that dropped its valve into the cylinder as he drove down the street.

My research on the Hemi problem shows the issue to be most prevalent in the 04 and 05 years. There have also been a few 06 units.

I believe that Jasper has a pretty good warranty, and I have seen quite a few remans as well as new units on Ebay.

Most folks are reporting between $1500-$4000 for the engine depending on new or some level of used. Labor to make the swap has been $1800-$2200 for a reference.
