Need help !!!! 5.7 hemi knock!!!

Default hemi tick

I had the same tick coming from drivers side bell housing area. Pulled my starter to check flex plate bolts and found the bearing in the nose of the starter was loose. Replaced the OE starter with a new OE starter (new OE was cheaper than reman) noise was gone, its been about 4 weeks now. crossing my fingers!

Default New Engine

Installed the Power Train engine and it runs great. Quite a job to install a 5.7 in a Durango.

glad to hear you are on the road again! I am still working on my "Winter project" :-) I got the engine completely disassembled last weekend (unfortunately this is a nights and weekend project, and with the holidays, school concerts, work and occasionaly sleep this is a slow and b#@$h of a job) I found 1 rod snapped in 3 peices, another was as crooked as a dog leg, but not broken. I plan on uploading pics when i can. I watch too much CSI shows on TV but I will determine what happened. Of the rear 4 cylinders 3 had rust/water lines on the top of the cylinders (not coolant...Water!). I took a closer examination of the intake manifold and the 3rd bolt back on the passenger side, which is the only bolt down in a "hole", is totally rusted and the shaft of the bolt is discolored. All the other bolts look normal and the threaded portions are totally shiny, as they should be. Two of the cylinders with the rusty water lines are where the rod that broke are directly below this rusted bolt! I tipped the intake to stand it up and low and behold there is STILL a puddle of water inside the intake manifold looking in the air inlet area. I am going to attempt to bolt the head & the intake back thgether and see if I can duplicate any water leakage issues. Sorry to be so long here :0, will keep you all posted.

Both the Hemi and the 4.7L are known for loose/snapped intake and exhaust manifold bolts.

Sounds to me like you had water get into those two cylinders and they hydrolocked.

Such sad way to loose what may have been an otherwise good engine.

So far, the 04 and 05 Hemis have been noted for valve spring and crank issues that destroy the engine.

I think and hope Dodge got those kinks worked out by 2006. I may have heard of 1 07 Hemi that croaked also, but cannot recall the method of it's demise.

Since my D does not have the MDS, I don't know what extra hardware they added to make it work.

One would hope that repairing it would not require removal of the heads. The early Hemi's did have valve spring issues. I hope they took a good look there for obvious signs of damage before pulling the heads.

I agree 100% that if you have treated it well, no way such major issues should be present at this mileage.

Please keep us posted so we know what the remedy is. Hopefully this will not be another boondoggle like the 04-05 collapsing valve springs that destroyed quite a few Hemi's including mine.

There is a code for incorrect viscosity it's PO15..something.

The #7 rod broke right at the crank, luckily in a lot of pieces. Small dent in the pan but no block damage. I sealed down the cowl as it was at least 1/4 inch from the windshield. Still runs OK but the 4 lock light is coming on and it won't go into gear sometimes.

When I called my Chrysler dealer about the parts cost on some items he said his parts book specifically tells them that you need to "replace the intake manifold if you have had a catastrophic engine failure". I had never heard of such a reccommendation when a bottom end goes out to replace the intake. I looked in my Mitchell On Demand software and it did not say that. The funny thing is, if you are familiar with Mitchell repair sofware, that it will give you an OEM part number and list price on most parts and on the intake manifold it is a NEW part number and almost double the cost!! Could it be that even tho Chrysler denies any such issue exists with their "Hemi" products that one surley exists??? I will pay close attention to the new one when it arrives and keep you updated. Sorry again this is a long post and a longer process!

I could see changing the intake if there was large amounts of heat involved, but for any catastrophic failure?

I guess I should have changed the intake when I changed the valve springs...
