Default engine knocking and rough idle

I have a 2004 Durango 4.7L and it was fine on the way to work today. When I started it to go home I heard the engine knocking real bad when I first started it up and it was idling pretty rough. The more I accelerated and the higher the RPM's got, the faster the knocking got. I got up to about 50mph once and it started shaking pretty bad. My check engine light has been on and off for months but this is the first time it has not driven right.

I checked all the fluids and everything is fine. Any idea what it could be and if I could try and fix it myself, or should I take it in to get looked at? (I'm trying to avoid taking it in and getting ripped off)

Thanks for your help,
John

Do you know the codes that were stored by the CEL? It may be broken manifold studs,

I don't know the codes for the CEL...from what I've read and researched on here, it could be broken manifold studs. I do think I heard kind of a cracking sound when I started it leaving work - does that make sense?

Flip:

How many miles on your D?

Driving for months with a CE light on and not looking into it can end up costing you big money.

The 4.7 is a good engine, and is known for exhaust manifold leaks due ton loose or broken bolts.

Do the key dance by turning your ign key from off to run three times withing 5 seconds, and then see what P codes it shows on your odometer display.

Could be lots of things including a fuel pump. Don
