Default 06 5.7L RPM change

2006, 5.7L, AWD, 72K mi. I'll be cruising along on the interstate with the cruise set at 70, no wind, no hill, nothing that would cause an RPM change under normal circumstances. At very random intervals the RPMs will jump up 50-100, stay there for 30-60 sec and then go back down. There is a noticieable "snap" coming from the engine compartment, much like a solienoid energizing.

This happens at other speeds and under different loads, but it just doesn't seem like a tranny issue to me. It's very strange. I've been having an intermintent CE light coming and going due to an EGR valve that can't decide if it wants to give up the ghost or not. Doesn't seem to be related. Anybody experienced anything similar to this?

Change the EGR valve and check the throttle position sensor,

+1 for the TPS (throttle position sensor) check. My 2001 Ram did the same thing at about 80k, and turns out my factory TPS unit was getting really flaky. Replaced it, problem solved.

Guys:

Recall that while the 4.7 engine uses a separate TPS, the 5.7 motor does not. It is apart of the throttle body assembly and is not serviceable.

The EGR valves seem to be an issue on Chrysler/Dodge vehicles in general. I would replace it just to rule that possibility out.

There are aftermarket models less than $100.
