Default Broken shock! What the...??

Hi guys, I don't post very often but this problem has me nuts! Can anyone tell me how this could have happened out of the blue??

2007 Durango AWD/4WD

I've been having some rattling and clunking going on under the front drivers side lately and about 3 months ago I replaced the shocks not only because they needed it but I hoped it would end the noises. Well the new shocks did not stop the noises but my Durango rode WAY better so I was happy with that at least.

Today I took it in to have the wheels rotated. (That's all they did it) After that I took off and a few miles down the road the rattling and clanking noises were gone! So I was excited but perplexed at the same time. Then I heard a louder and out of the ordinary clunk when I hit a bigger dip in the road but it still road fine and didn't do it again all the way home (30 miles).

Side note: not sure if this is normal or not but the suspension "bump stops" that stop the lower control arms are only about 1.5"-2" from the control arms. (in otherwords only about 2" of travel...) Both sides are that way but the ride height on the truck does not look low by any means.

I get home and look underneath and I see this:

What the heck could have caused this????? Thanks for any help!

Could have been a "bad apple" shock...

Did you take it in to a $tealership to get the tires rotated? They could have damaged it accidentally somehow.

No I actually took it to Tires Plus where I bought the tires. I was standing there peaking in on them every once in a while and all I could really tell they were doing is simply rotating the tires. I don't really suspect that they did anything but I'm still going back over there to talk to them.

It's just weird to me because it seems like there would have to be some pretty serious side play in there because of some other problem like swaybar or control arms being out of whack or something??

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe it was a bad apple like you say and when they had it up on the lift the shock piston managed to get stuck in there cockeyed and then stayed there after they let it down and the first bump I hit buckled the shock...
