DR:

Congrats on the new (to you) Durango and welcome to the forum!

How many miles on your D, and is it the 5.7 which is the Hemi, or the 4.7 which is not?

The exhaust manifold issue you worked with is very common on the 4.7 motor, and less so on the 5.7.

I cannot think of anything you could have done to make a coolant odor appear after that job except possibly damaging a heater hose.

Do I understand that you are smelling coolant at the tailpipe? Does the engine run rough? Are you getting an abnormally high amount of water vapor from the tailpipe?

About the only thing that would cause this would be a blown head gasket or a leaking intake manifold gasket.

Thanks for the reply, and the welcome,, first time owner of a Dodge and loving it.. with some repairs I knew it keep in mind it's a 2004 slt yep it's a 4.7 v8, it's got 140,000kilo on it.
the smell came before I did the work, but previous own had the oil pump, timing kit done.

the other day all of a sudden the durango started heating up and fast on idle when moving it came down a bit,, let it cool down added some antifreeze .. underneath I see no leaks what so ever.. but yesterday I was in the garage and since we just repaired the gasket we wanted to see if it was ok for leaks so opened the door started her up and antifreeze smell. from the tail pipe . now is there a test I can do to confirm witch one it is ie. headgasket or intake

im having this issue as well. when i first start my d in the morning i get a slight smell of coolant. but i am starting to think i have a major issue with my d. i am having to add coolant at least once a week, and im talking like half a bottle. i checked the oil, its fine, no signs of antifreeze in the oil, as a matter of fact, i just changed the oil last weekend and it was fine. pure oil, and clean oil at that. i recently changed the thermostat, so i thought maybe that was the issue, and might be leaking from the bottom radiator hose, but no. everything is nice and tight there. i cant find any visible leaks at all. everything seems nice and dry under the hood, and under the truck. it was running a bit hotter then normal, i would check the coolant, add as needed, and now its getting to be like an everyday thing that it is running hot, sometimes overheating, and having to add coolant every other day or so. i have checked the oil, its clean and fine, i checked the tranny fluid, its fine, theres no white smoke or steam coming out of the exhaust, so im stumped...

DR:

How did the tech confirm it? The 4.7 engines are known for intake and exhaust manifold bolt issues.

Possibly you have a broken or loose intake gasket. That's way better than having to pull a had.

Was coolant present in the oil? My thought would be that if you pull one head, might as well pull both since the labor will be almost as much with one. Most of the top of the motor comes off along with the timing chains.

When they get in there, if the chains have much slack at all might be good to replace them also. The chain kit is around $300 though, so the price of the repair will increase a bit.

The mechanic had a test with some liquid in it, he heated up the engine, then place his liquid in the rad, if the liquid turns Green it's a positive head gastket they say.. I've seen it on video's.. Timing chain kit and oil pump was put in .
that was in July..I've ordered the head gasket it with all gaskets, and head bolts, plus I ordered a rad. cap.
