2005 Hemi Durango question
Hello everyone. This is my 1st post on this forum.
I have a 2005 Durango with a 5.7L Hemi engine. I am really enjoying the vehicle. (220 miles so far)
I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
Some times the engine make a sound as if a huge fan is blowing when Im starting from a full stop.
It happens mostly when it is 1st started and I pull away from the curb. It has also happenes after
waiting in line @ Mc Donalds for fast food (drive through.
) I thought it might be the transmission
slipping but the truck goes just fine.
Is the fan on front of the hemi always spinning like the old V8 engines? Or is the 100+ degree heat
here in NJ making it kick in and thus the loud "fan" noise Im thinking it is? With my luck it might be
the trans.
Well, I guess thats a few questions, not just one.
Thanks!

First off, welcome to the forums!
I've noticed that after first starting my '05 HEMI Durango and pulling away it makes a huge roaring sound as well. I attribute it to me being only about 50' from the stop sign where I live. I accelerate and just as it is about to shift into 2nd gear I let off the throttle to slow down for the stop sign. Seems it never shifts into 2nd during this routine since the revs stay up. Hence the loud noise. My wife thought I was in tow/haul mode lol.
But to answer a couple questions, here goes. The truck is equipped with a mechanical fan just like those used for many years. I would wager it is a clutch fan that would disengage at higher rpms to promote fuel economy. The truck also has an electric fan on the A/C condensor mounted to the left of the radiator. So to answer your question: yes. And no! [8D] hehe
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the reply.
Thats exactly it. It "roars". It worries me that it does this after being in line at a fast food drive thru.
Especially after reading this thread:

I've never owned a car this "high-tech". My 2 other cars are a 97 Plymouth Breeze and a 2001 Neon. :-)
I'll hope for the best. I'm glad we still have the 7-70 with the 05 model.
PS- It looks like we have the same Durango. Does yours have the 28G package?

What you are hearing is exactly that, the viscous fan running at full steam causing the roar noise. What happens is at a hot idle, fluid inside the viscous fan coupling moves from the front as it is heated to the back locking the fan blades to the input shaft (attached to the water pump) and this increases the blades speed at idle. When you take off from an extended idle in hot conditions it takes 30s to a minute for the fluid to cool and return to the front section of the viscous coupling and release the fan blades from the input shaft. The blades are still rotating with the engine, just at a reduced speed because air is flowing through the radiator again.
Thanks for the excellent reply. It makes me feel so much better about my Durango.
I was saying to myself, it sounds like a fan, and because the sound increases with
engine RPM, it got me thinking maybe trans. Now I know.
Again, excellent reply.

Hi everyone. This is also my first post on this forum.
I have lived with the load fan roar at start for years. As of last week, the roar doesn't stop after warm up. It roars even after driving for a long time. Is there a sensor that can be replaced or does the whole fan have to go?
Thanks.

Yip, I just got my fan clutch replaced a month and a half ago and the noise is just irritating the hell out of me. I guess when I first bought this Durango, the fan clutch must have been weak because it never roared like this unless it is really hot outside (100+). With this new clutch, it always roar for the first 10-15 minutes and then the noise will eventually go away (cool outside temps), but if it is hot outside or if you idle for a while, the fan will always roar.
You might want to see if you can upgrade to an electric fan to replace the mechanical fan you have. It would help the noise and free up some power in the engine. I know people are doing it on the 1st gen D's with good results.
