Transmission pump issue?
This morning my fathers durango stopped putting power down to the ground, it wont engage an gears, park works, if you put it in any other gear it just rolls as if it was in neutral, there is now a whining noise coming from the engine/trans gets sort of louder with RPMs. Is it possible that the pump is not building any pressure? This happened under regular operation. It has under 120k but over 100k, i dont remember the exact number.
Mike:
Sounds like the torque convertor may have given up the ghost. Is this a 2005 Durango by chance?
We have an 05 at work that did the same thing, except at a little over 70K miles.
You might be able to get away with just a new convertor, but in some cases if the convertor self destructs badly it can send debris throughout the trans causing fatal damage.
When was the last time the trans was serviced?

I agree with Don, The 45/545RFE transmission have had some torque converter problems. Not that many, but some. In most cases the torque converter has been the problem. I would also service the transmission as Don was writing. I recommend not to touch the front pump, unless you have the special tools to replace the pump.

If the filters were change not long ago. I would drop the pan and check the seal going into the pump. It may have fell off the pump and slide down the filter neck. If that happen, then you will loose all gears.

Thanks for the confirmation that I was thinking along the right lines on this.
Mike:
When we say "serviced", that is mechanic/forum jargon for how recently the trans had a filter/fluid change.
Flushing is not recommended unless it has been done on a regular basis and includes dropping the pan to clean it and change the filters.
The 45/545RFE is a pretty tough trans, and unless it is abused or suffers a parts failure the track record for them is pretty darned good.
MT can speak with more wisdom on this than I can. I don't turn wrenches for a living, but I do read a lot on these online forums and stay in touch with quite a few folks in the fleet industry.
