Lighten the right foot. But seriously, there is no magic formula otherwise the manufacturers would do done it.
Basics; service the unit, plugs and filters. Keep it running properly.
You may gain 1 mpg or so with a tuner.
Inflate tires to max pressure.Use low rolling resistance tires.
Other that that, driving style. look up hypermiling. Those guys get every mile from fuel just by the way they drive.
it's really the biggest bang for the buck. Any mods you do won't pay over the life of the vehicle.

moe here, iam from the dakota side. if you drive in town mostly. readjust the shift linkage it shift earlier. on my dak i had the gear changed to 4.1. this let my shifting to be way earlier. mine goes into top gear about 35 MPH, at 1400 rpm. all at light throttle. and it has the power to pull the truck at low RPM. the trick is the gearing and short shifting, and light throttle. its not for every one.

easy on the gas and leave space in front of you so you dont have to brake then accelerate in town if you see a light change yellow from a ways away just take your foot off the gas let your car slow down because of the friction theirs no need to run 35+ to a red light and start stopping 30 feet from it also helps your brakes last longer

-Keep the rpms below 2500 and be easy on/off the pedal.
-Make sure your air pressure in your tires is where it should be.
-Look at the current plugs in the engine. If you have to, change out the plugs, but most important thing no matter if they are brand new or your current plugs are fine, verify the gap. (re-gapped the plugs in the stratus in my sig and gained almost 2mpg. They were off from what the manual states they should be)

Seriously, I get 16mpg in town with our durango (4.7AWD w/tow). My wife gets 11. Difference is, she's hard on the thottle and then is on/off of it so much so hard that I literally start getting sea sick (which I never get). She just got 16mpg on the highway and when I took it on a small all highway trip, I got 21 running around 70-72mph. Keeping the rpms low and easy into the throttle/keeping it steady is key.
