Default 2007 Durango Clunk when Accelerating on Highway

Hi Guys,

I have a 2002 durango with 200,000 miles and I am thinking of purchasing a 2007 Durango, 60,000 miles 5.7L.

During the test drive, at highway speed (70 MPH) I would hear a clunk if I engaged the accelerator. Not hammering it, just pressing the pedal to accelerate gradually to say 75 MPH. Remaing in top gear....Engage accelerator....CLUNK, release.....engage, CLUNK, release. REPEAT

It seemed to come from the back-end.

After exiting and re-entering the highway the CLUNK was gone.

Maybe the tranny or diff oil had warmed up? Any thoughts or similar experience?

Thank you for your help.

Dunk

I would start by checking the rear ujoints if you are still thinking of purchasing the vehicle.

Maybe a Honda Prius was under your Durango

My wife's Durango has been doing this for along time but it does it all the time warm or cold. It's awd and can't seem to find area its coming from. Waiting for Something to fail but seems to not want to. Oh and wife's Durango has 327,000 on it

@Dunk:

+3 on most likely to be a worn drivetrain component. I am just shy of 83K on my 04 Durango, and the driveline is nice and quiet.

@Howells:
You do not say what year your wife's D is. At 327K, could be just about anything. If it is a 98-03 D, take a close look at the front driveshaft. The U joint at the T case is well known for issues after 100K or so.

I don't think there are enough Gen 2 Ds out there with 150K+ yet to know what their quirks will be .

It's an 2007 with a 4.7. It's on the highway all the time. And everything looks okay. I might try changing the transfercase fluid and see if it helps.
