Default Flapping noise coming from engine

I have recently started to notice a loud flapping noise that comes from the left side of my engine every time I accelerate in my 2006 Durango. The sound gets louder as I accelerate and then stops the minute I let off the gas. My durango has about 143,000 miles on it and is in pretty good condition other than the new noise. I just want to know what it could mean. I don't really know much about cars and I want to have some information on what the noise could be before I bring it to a mechanic.

Have you looked in the engine compartment for anything strange? Like a fraying belt?

I checked the engine and there seems to be nothing noticeably wrong. The belts and everything else looks good.

My 2008 (4.7) does the same thing..122000 miles on it. Sounds like a exhaust manifold issue. Mine gets quiet after it warms up, but its irritating to listen to. It runs good, so I am not going to put the money in to it.

I would agree with Yarls24.

Guys:
Agreed that the probable issue is an exhaust leak at one or both manifolds. The 4.7 engine is well known for loose or broken exhaust manifold bolts.
While you can leave it this way, IMO the sound denotes a vehicle that is not well cared for, and that does not work for me.
I want my vehicles to run like they are supposed to, and since I take good care of them they usually take good care of me.
