Default 2007 Durango or a truck? Which is best?

Hi, I am new to this forum so I hope this is the right spot for this.

I am wondering which vehicle would be best for me. I am going to be 16 soon and I have a couple options for which vehicle I can drive. My parents currently drive a 2007 Durango with 93,000 miles on it. It has the 4.7L V8. It runs good and has no issues. It is paid off and they are going to get a new vehicle soon. My options are to either drive this, or sell it and buy a Dodge (or Chevy or Ford) truck. I would only get half of the money if we sold it since it is my parents vehicle not mine. So if it sold for around 9k I would probably get 4k or so, and I already have 2k so I would have $6,000 total to spend on a truck. I would like to stay around $5,000 if I bought it so that I can upgrade if I want.

I am going to be driving around 15 miles a day for sure for school, and probably another 5-10 just messing around, a total of roughly 25 a day. The durango gets about 14 mpg. On the weekends, probably every other weekend I will be towing a trailer, sometimes the single axle we have, sometimes the double axle, to go ride fourwheelers. It will be about 30 miles there, 30 back.
If you have any advice please let me know! Thanks!

505,

Welcome to the forum.

While I cannot really give my opinion as to what you should do, the question that needs to be answered is will you find a truck for $5,000 that will be better than what you currently have in the Durango? Seems you have a vehicle that fits your needs now, most likely gets about the same mileage as you would get in a pickup, and has no known issues. I would think you would be hard pressed to find all those pluses in a truck from any manufacturer for $5,000. I am sure others will chime in and offer their opinions as well. Good luck with whatever you decide and if there is anything else I can do for you just let me know.

I agree. $5,000.00 is not a lot of money for a used truck and you know the history and service maintenance of your parents' truck.
