Unhappy trans problems 5.7 hemi

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie on your forum, but i found so much good infos that i decided to join in and to be able to exposed my problem. My transmision just give up last week. My wife was driving on the highway and suddenly she lost all gear! I can just say that she freak out a little!!! I tow the D at tranny shop, and the verdict fall today: i need a complete rebuilt of the tranny at a very friendly cost of: 2026 plus tax!! The question is: do i really need a complete rebuilt if only the torque fail? They show me that the clutch are a little burn, but can clutch problem can cause this? And by the way, since the trans is crack open, can i beefed up something?

Thanks.

Often when the TC goes is sends crap all thru the tranny. Its best just to have the whole thing done or you'll be back down the road.

Not sure about the hemi tranny but I have put shift kits into trannys to make them shift better. Not sure how this would work on a computer controlled tranny.

When my sister had her 2001 Dodge 1500 tranny rebuilt she told them she towed with the truck and they recommended up the line pressures to make it shift and hold better. Drove better when they got it back then it did when new.

Ask the tranny shop and see what they recommend.

Johnny:

What year is your Durango, and how many miles on it. The trans you have (545RFE) is a pretty tough trans.

Clay's comment about a bad convertor sending debris through the trans is a valid thought.
The 545RFE trans has a spin on return line filter that is supposed (I believe) to help protect aginst this particular danger.
We had an 05 Durango at work that lost all forward and reverse gears, and a new TC was the ticket.

If the trans is already out and torn down though, I think putting it back in with only the new TC might not be cost effective in the long run if the miles are high.

The price of $2026 does not sound bad as long as they offer a good warranty on the job.

thanks Don, my d is a 2005 with tow package, with 3.92 gear, with only 133000KM (83000mi). I bought it used in 2010 with 62000mi. The last owner bought it for dragging his boat. Maybe he was too hard with it. Do you think that something can be done, since the trans is open, to beefed it up a little or improve it? Do you think that burnt clucht can do that? (lost all gear)

Thanks for your support.

Hi Johnny:

I want to make clear that I am in no way a trans expert. The knowledge I have is culled from my own experiences and what I have learned from friends and other Durango owners.

Others who know may chime in as far as beefing up your 545RFE. My understanding is that properly taken are of, it should do a fine job for you a long time.

I would have them show you what damage was done by the convertor breaking down, and if you are not satisified they are legit, have them replace the converter and see what happens.
Do you know the service history of the trans? 83K is not a lot of miles for that trans.

Half the cost of getting a trans done is pulling it in and out. Another large portion is the TC. Just putting the TC back in and not getting the rest will just cost you more down the road. Also there most likely would be no warranty on the work if the whole trans isn't done.

Johnny, where do you live? I'm guessing Canada by the Kms. I'm close to Calgary.
