Vents Not Switching - NOT AN ACTUATOR PROBLEM!
Hello, new to the forum here but I thought I would try this out since I don't seem to be getting anywhere with face-to-face people.
I own a 2006 Durango, 5.7L 4x4, the SLT model. I read the "Read Before Posting" post but honestly I don't know what the engine or transmission is. Is that the 5.7L? I'm not a mechanic, can you tell?!
The vents started acting up last year, they would get stuck on different settings or would switch without me changing them, so I took it to a mechanic friend. He swore it was the actuators. We replaced one of them and there wasn't any difference. The next time we tried changing them small pieces of Whatever It Is They Plug Into fell out, obviously broken pieces of plastic. So the actuators are not the problem, the thing they plug into is. Has anyone else had this problem? What does it cost to replace? Is there any other option?
I live in Alaska so the same mechanic has been able to "lock" the vents into Defrost, which is a necessity up here in the winter. And this spring he "locked" the vents into the dash vents so we could use the A/C and be comfortable. But with winter coming again I am interested in hearing if his quote of $1500-2000 is accurate and if I really have to dish out that much money for a vehicle barely worth $9000.
Again, I am not a mechanic so I have to rely on other people to fix my vehicles, and trust in their judgement of what said fixes cost.
Thank you in advance for any advice you might be able to give me!
Haley
