Hi, my 2008 Dodge Durango SLT Hemi is making a popping sound while driving. I was wondering if the popping is actually a backfire. What could possibly be going wrong or if a part is failing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 

A backfire will sound like a gun going off behind you and a detonation will sound like a knocking sound in front of you. Two different sounds in two different locations. Where do you here the sound?

Ok, it`s definitely a popping sound. Is it safe to run my OBD II while driving so that it can register the problem? Any ideas what could possibly be? The sound seems like it's coming from the center of the motor.
