Last week my wife opened the rear hatch of our 07 durango and it was really heavy for her and it wouldn't stay open. I am not really sure if I just need to replace the lift gate supports? How do I tell?

I'm sorry to learn of your liftgate concern.
Are you able to hear the hydraulics release as the hatch goes up? Did this issue happen suddenly, or has the liftgate been getting progressively heavier?
It happened suddenly. When I open and close it I can hear a sound like one of the supports is trying to work (hydraulics) but nothing at all from the other.

It seems as though one has you have been able to determine that one is no longer functioning. Have you had an opportunity to notify your servicing facility?

From the sounds of it, the one or both lift struts have lost their charge. They can be bought for less than $50 a pair, and replaced DIY in about 10 minutes.
