Default Post ATF change, problems....

I have a 2007 Durango 4.7l. Today I replaced the transmission filters with mopar parts. Then I started adding mopar fluid and ran through all the gears while it was running to see when to stop filling. I put 6.25 qts, but it's still showing low. Reverse works great, Drive is slow to get going, acceleration after 40mph feels a little slow too. I'm afraid of overfilling, also afraid of damaging the transmission. Any clues as to why it's doing this? Worked fine before the fluid change.

Charles:
When you installed the new main sump filter, did you install the new seal onto the filter first? I believe that is the recommended procedure. Remember that trans fluid expands as it warms. How low on the stick is it reading?
Hopefully you went back in with a Dodge approved ATF+4 spec fluid.

If you're asking about the filter that attaches with the star bit, yes, It came with a seal and I put it on before installing it. I also replaced the spin on filter and made sure remnants of the old were not left behind, and I lubricated the new spin on filter. I used Mopar ATF-4 fluid. The level is reading a little I've the COLD line even though it was at operating temperature. Thanks

Charles:
Sounds like you did everything to spec. I assume the old sump filter seal came out or was removed before installing the new one? Being 1 quart low should not cause any issues. I would make sure it is warmed up, and then add .5 quart at a time until it reads full. Then, go for a test drive. You may also want to do a battery disconnect reset so that the system can relearn the hopefully better operation brought about by the new fluid.

Typically on any trans service I pour whatever comes out into gallon jugs (let the filters drain too) so I have a rough estimate of how much to put back in. It's been a loooong time since I did my 2WD 545RFE since it doesn't get driven much anymore but I want to say about two gallons came out with both the filters being changed so you can't really set the service manual's spec in stone. The canister filter is on the cooler return so that may let more come out than a standard main filter service.

It takes fifteen miles or so for it to warm up so just follow what was posted by n8tech and you should be fine to get it back where it needs to be.

Edit: Just went out and checked the 60k mile service entry in my booklet and I had written down 8.5 quarts added for the trans service. That was April 10, 2011 and I'm actually going out later today to get motor oil and gear oil for the 75k service which gives you an idea of how much it gets driven these days.

I went through a somewhat prolonged disconnect/reset and it's driving great so far. Still showing low so I'm going to pick up more ATF and go from there. I'll post an update once that's done. Thanks for all the help and advice!

Battery disconnect seemed to do the trick. No issues while driving it, no leaks. Thanks for the help guys!
