Default AC system intermittently working, no freon leak

2005 Durango Limited. I had it checked for leaks and charged, that side seems OK.

When you get going, system on auto, it cools fine. After a while, it starts to get warm and the fan starts to ramp up but no air blows out the vents. When you take it out of auto and turn off the AC, after a few minutes it starts blowing cool air from the vents. Eventually it gets warm and when you put it back in auto, it cools again. This repeats all day long.

It seems like something is freezing up and then thawing when the AC is turned off.

Any ideas?

It sounds like we might have the same issue. You can look at my posts on her titled 2006 Durango ac problems and air conditioner problems. I'm still fighting this battle as of today. I have spent 3000.00 on this system in the last 20 months. Everything has been replaced. There was even a technical service bulletin for this problem which I had done. I don't have an answer for you.

I checked out your posts, thanks!

I fixed the year. It's a 2005 not a 2007.

Anyone else have thoughts?

It is possible that the heater door in the dash is not closing as it should. There is also an electric type valve that the heater hoses hooks to in front of the passenger tire by the frame. This valve is supposed to shut the hot water off and I guess not let in interfere with the cool air. Anyway, I clamped off the hoses and my vent temp dropped down to 49 degrees. So, I think my valve is bad. It about 150.00 so I am going to replace it next week. Now I'm having battery drain issues. I'm so ready to run this thing off in the bay!!

I have had this same issue for years. It is my understanding that the actuators that control the various doors inside the ac box under the dash tend to wear out the socket that grips the actual blend door. Either the part on the actuator wears out or breaks or the part on the actual blend door breaks or both. Thats just my understanding of it. It is similar on many dodge products made during the 2000's. Those parts just dont last. The only way to fix them is to pull the dash, which my itself is over $1000 in labor alone. Then the doors and actuators should all be replaced. This is happening in mine as well. Im not going to fix it though. I have already paid thru the nose to have the dash removed and the evaporator replaced, and I will sell this vehicle and get another one before i do that again.

Don't use Auto. Depending on the temp setting, your blend door will be on the ramp between the hot and cold side and the mix may not work correctly. It's not something that can be fixed normally. It's usually the perception of the driver. Besides, it operates on the basis of CABIN temp, not VENT temp.

Auto climate control is sort of a silly idea for the small coverage area of an automobile anyway, especially when the outlets are so close to the passengers. We get tons of service lane complaints with auto climate during the summer months. Heat with Humidity variance plays a huge part in that. Climate control is more suitable for the Fall and Winter.

I dont have Auto Air. mine will work great for a while. after an hour or so on the interstate, it will just slowly divert air to nowhere. It doesnt come out anywhere that I can tell. TO get it back, I have to turn it off and let it sit for 15-30 mins. then when I turn it back on, it works for a little while again.

Now lately im having other issues I posted in another thread.

Default Do you use A/C in recirculation mode?

I've had the same problem sometimes in my Durango 20006 Limited. But the problem only appears if i use the A/C in recirculation mode. If i use it in open outside air mode the A/C works just fine. The problem doesn't happens all the time and when it does, is only in the front A/C, the rear blower motor keeps running fine. After half an hour of rest the front A/C works fine again.

As it doesn't happens all the time, i usually use A/C in open mode (unless it gets really hot) and that's kind of working for me.

My weird guess is, as the Durango doesn't seems to have a cabin air filter, after the years of use, a lot of dust and stuff like that comes into the system and if you recirculate the air inside the cabin for long, it gets to clogg someting inside the system or overheat the blower.
