Default Aftermarket Stereo Install Questions

So I have an 05 Durango SLT, no Infinity sound, no steering wheel controls, no navigation. From what I've been reading, the factory CD player is a 1.5 DIN, plus the dash has the extra cutouts for the volume and radio tuner ***** on either side. I've installed several aftermarket stereos before in different cars, but I'm having a little trouble getting solid info on some things for this particular install. Here are some questions that hopefully you all can answer:

1. Will I need to modify the dash facade to fit a standard double DIN stereo? The Metra kit linked below seems to give a template for cutting out the dash to fit double DIN.

2. Given that I don't have an upgraded sound system with steering wheel controls, is there a basic wiring harness I can get to just wire up a new head unit? I found this, but it indicates a required accessory module to retain the other functions, which I don't necessarily need.

3. Besides soldering, is there a recommended way to do the wiring connections? Any preferred crimp connections or whatever?

Also, is there a better forum section I should cross-post this to? I'm new here. :-D

Thanks in advance for your help!
