On an 05 Durango you had to order the NV244 transfer case if the Hemi option was selected. This also was the only two speed transfer case offered in the Durango. The better transfer case could be selected with the 4.7, but standard was the single speed transfer case. I think it was an NV190? The front and rear diffs on a 4x4 equipped models are Chrysler corporate 8.25. If you ordered a 4x2 the rear diff is a 9.25. You could not get the 9.25 rear in the 4x4, only the 4x2. As far as a limited slip, it was not offered from the factory. I wanted one and it could not be put on the build sheet. The corporate 8.25 has been around forever so several manufactures make aftermarket limited slips/lockers for that axle. Standard gearing was 3.55 with an optional 3.92. If you wanted the 3.92 gearing it was a separate selection on the build sheet indepdant of the tow package. All drive train options could be had in the SLT and above trim packages. I am fairly sure the 04s were close in all this. The 05 tow package included the items listed above with no others to the best of my knowledge, the 04s might not have had the mirrors I don't know, does anybodys 04 have folding mirrors? The power steering cooler is a black array mounted low and horizontal in front of the radiator. The transmission cooler is silver and upright toward the left side facing the front of the vehicle. The air conditioning condenser is right facing the vehicle and has its own fan assembly. It sounds like the previous owner removed the hitch assembly and sold it. It is also possible the previous owner had the trans/pwr steering coolers added at the dealer. If you are the original owner then the dealer probably switched the hitch to another Durango to get it sold. Unless of course you ordered the thing, then who knows why its there.

I can only think of two reasons that you could have the two additional coolers without the rest off the package. I am 99% sure you cannot purchase most options ala cart like you were able to in the past. Either the PO had them installed because he thought he was going to tow. Or the factory guys screwed up when assembling the vehicle. They were not paying attention to the build sheet when the unit came down the assembly line. If that is the case then maybe someone out there payed for a tow package and got everything but the trans/pwr steering coolers. Wouldn’t that chap your hide. Especially if you egged a tranny while pulling a horse trailer because the tranny overheated.

Another thing I've noticed is in the rear, I have the subwoofer trim piece without a subwoofer. I double checked my window sticker, no subwoofer. Even shined a flashlight through the grille. I don't know, maybe they just threw in a bunch of extra pieces that were lying around when they built my D.

Apart from the hitch, what is the difference then between the "Heavy Service Group" and the "Trailer Tow Package"?

There is also the heavy duty suspension shock option that you have to order from the dealer when ordering your Durango.

To find out your what gear set is in your axles, check the sticker in the bottom of the glove box.

FYI, I believe the one speed transfer case is the NV 144 which has AWD and 4 Lock which is 4 high. The NV144 does not have 4 Low which one would only use to pull stumps and/or go off roading.

ok I had a question I got an 05 durango and it has the awd/4lock and I was wondering when awd is on does that mean all 4 wheels turn constantly or is it just if I hit a slick surface and as far as the 4 lock goes when should I use that and what exactly does it do.

Adam:

Starting with the 04 model year, all 4x4 Durangos are full time AWD. In the AWD mode, power is transferred to both front and rear axles all the time.AWD mode operates like an open differential in a drive axle in that if one wheel begins to slip, you can become stuck because all of the power will go to that spinning wheel. This is where the 4 Lock mode comes in as when you select 4 Lock, the front and rear driveshafts are made to turn at the sale speed which will force power to at least one other wheel and hopefully get you going.

I really like the AWD option, and earlier this year I added the AWDT case to my 01. So far, I have not regretted it yet.

A few posts back someone was wondering why they had the extra coolers (transmission and steering) but not a hitch with a "tow package".
One other possibility that I didn't see mention of is that many used car dealers remove the hitches before putting the vehicles on their lots. The idea is that ifa potential buyersees a hitch, they assume that the vehicle was used for towing and therefore could have related problems down the road.
I have several friends in the used car business and they all tell me that this happens quite often.
