Tire/wheel questions 04 SLT 4x4

RE: Tire/wheel questions 04 SLT 4x4
Chewy,
Thanks I had my Duelers that were rated for 40k, but I got almost 52k out of them, and they were still going strong even as my little red wagon (98 CHEROKEE)goes off to the auction. Based on reviews and recommendations I am sold on All Terrains, and Costco. This is my first set of new tires in four years, and the only reason for that is new vehicle. I guess you could call it a good thing for that in that I got a good quality set that lasted a long time.

All,
Disregard my last post about the Goodrich All Terrains, I meantto say Long Trails. And since I am at it, change Goodrich to this. Can anyone provide input on the following item??............................................ .................................................. ............................................
Michelin® X-Radial LT P245/70R16
Light Truck/SUV All Season

If you go Michelin's go with 265/70R17 Cross Terrains. They fill out the wheel wells nice and you won't find a better riding tire with excellent winter traction. I put them on my wifes 05 Durango when they took it off the truck from the factory. The Cross Terrain is pehaps the best SUV tire made. Check out the reviews it gets on Tirerack.com.

Sorry for the late response. Thanks to those that replied to my first post. I'm still in the hunt for tires and decided to stay with my stock rims. I'm still stuck on the BFG All Terrain as I've had them on a Jeep before and my Dad has them on his pickup. I absolutely love this tire for highway/offroad/snow/ice/wet driving conditions. The wear is also great.
I've looked all over for the tire in the stock size(s) with no luck. Even BFG's site says they don't make it. Heres the catch. Sears.com says they carry it in a 245/70-17 on sale for $188/ea. Thats a little pricey, but I think I'll go with it. I'll let ya'll know how they look/ride once I'm done.

Seth, Thought you dropped off the face of the earth. welcome back... I have read a lot of good threads on this subject.I have read the reviews from Tirerack.com and talked to my COSTCO tire manager (tire monger as Food Network would probably call it.) He has steered me away from the Goodrich Long Trails, and ALL Terrains. I am more leaning towards the Michelins, they do show a Cross Terrain in 245/70/16's. I am either going with X radials LT or Cross Terrain. I need to visit Costcoand get the final verdict this week to make sure they are in stock. I need to keep the 16's to stay within the size of the rims, and costs down. I have narrowed down from four to two so we are getting closer. Thanks all for the help and input/suggestions.

Steve...why has he steered you away from the BFG's? These are great tires both on/off road. Now if you NEVER plan on going off road, thenmaybe there isn't a need for them. But with having such great on road capabilities, you can't go wrong for having them....this way if you ever venture down that dirt road/trail, you know that you won't have a traction problem. They are also GREAT in the snow....if that is, you get snow where you live/travel.

Well we are supposed to be in the snow belt of America but you wouldn't know it this year. I took a visit to Costco, looked at the Cross Terrain, you are right, they are good. Still undecided about the C/T or X-RAD but he did show me a cut in the sidewall that is showing cord, so there is more of a press to get it done this week. I think part of the extra pressure on the sidewall is because of the 265/70/16's in place of the factory recommended 245/70/16

Either Michelin will provide good service. I personally like the Cross Terrain because it is built to provide luxury car ride in truck like traction and performance. The X-Rad will give a more truck like ride because that is what it was designed to do. I bought the Hemi Limited and wanted the best ride that could be achieved. I had the X-Radials on a Dakota and found them to be excellent tires. The Cross Terrains are later model tires and have several technological advantages over the X-Rads. They are also warrantied for 65k miles.
I really don’t think going 20mm wider would damage a tire. If the tire is of good construction and kept properly inflated it shouldn’t matter. 265/70R16 tires are recommended to mounted on rim widths between 7 and 8.5 inches. I am pretty sure the your stock rims are at least 7". The inside door post info will give you the exact rim width. Personally I would go with the 265s because taller and/or wider looks better on a truck or suv.

I got the X-RADS, So far very happy, in reading the research/reviews good recommendations. I went with the 245/70/16 (Times4) about $505 out the door. I read the computer model and their model shows less fuel economy and higher actual mileage with the 265's. I am going with the factory recommendations of 245 and will take my chances. If I have problems I will adjust as necessary, but if they are maintained and treated/driven anything like my Bridgestone Duelers, I expect them to last approx 4-5 years at which time there may be new technology to surpass the Cross Terrains. They are on, and installed. I will be back in 25 miles for re Torquing/pressure check.. Thanks all for the input, I know there was a lot of talk about the 265's but I am not about height. My main goals were onroad/highway/allseaon/handling/ reasonable price/good reviews and good safe ride. So far I am impressed and I will continue to update members as conditions require. FYI, we actually got some snow/ice this week, of course before I got the tires, but there is hope. My main goal is not to test the limits of the tires but I feel confident with their abilities if it becomes necessary. Thanks again!!!!

24 hour FOllow up. Alignment and 25 mile torque checkafter installation complete.I put about 75 miles on today, so far MPG increased by about two, not much but every little helps right? Ride smooth, quiet, good handling tracks straight and nothing negative to say.
