Default Timing Belt

Hello, I gots me a 1999 Crysler Concorde with the 3.2 engine.. Im planning on swapin' out the timing belt soon.. Looking at some online docs, it says I need special tool 8194 for the damper.. and a 3 jaw. Does anyone knwo what the special tool 8194 is? Ive done my truck's Water pump before, and that took forever, and was messy, mostly took forever because of the Clutch fan heh, well I figure since I did that I should be able to do this, since its allot lower to the ground and most likely allot less dirty ( no coolant all over the place).. Figure Id save my self 300 bux if I did it my self.. Any pointers?

It's an adapter that you seat the puller on. I have a book for 97 and the 3.3 adapter shows an adapter (pn L-4524-1) that looks like a very fat washer (imagine 100 statcked together, but itshard to say how thick from the picture...I guess about 1 inch).

BTW, isn't the 3.3 chain driven?

When I did my 3.5 (that has a belt), the adapter is a metal rod about the size of a pencil, that is installed in a hole in the crank shaft. At first I tried a genaric puller for balencers...no luck, there wasn't enough clearance to get in there. Next I found on the right body length, and no luck! The jaw spread was too small! I gave up and ordered the puller on-line (along with the adapter)...it fit like a glove. The moral, get the right puller! I spent more time running around town, from auto store to hardware stores, trying to find a puller that would fit. Save yourself some time and effort!

Good luck,
Kurt

Im hoping the timing belt project wil be easier.. at least cleaner... :-) how long( not counting tool hunting) did it take you do swap the belt? Any other suggestions? :-) thanks for the reply :-D

The puller set I originally tried (free rental from auto zone) was a kit designed for pulling HB's and was a no go. They were all too big. I shopped around on line and ended going with sj tools. (see this post https://dodgeforum.com/m_1033880/tm.htm). Once I had tools in hand, the total time for the job was (best I can recall) about 4 hours. I did have a bit of time with the auto tensioner...after it's compressed in the vice, a locking pin had to be used to hold it compressed. At first I used a nail, which bent, making it impossible to get out. Recompressed and kept trying different things until I succeeded. I don't recall what I finally found that worked...Allen wrench maybe?

As for the engine size, like I said, I was looking at a 97 shop manual (first gen), only a 3.3 & 3.5 offered back then (1st gen). At the top of the 2nd gen forum, go to "the holy grail" and you can download the 2nd gen manual, but it only shows the 2.7 and 3.5. Yes the 2.7 is chain driven, but so was the 3.3

PS my puller pn was 1023 and was used for the 3.3 & 3.5

Well after about 3 hrs I had to back out.. Could not for the life of me get the stupid pully off.. the three jaw puller did fit, but I swear it was gonna break.. so I backed out ( with all my scratches from the radiator., man my hands got grated like cheese!!) Still need to do the timing belt, but I guess Ill have to buy a better puller.. Kurt, What did you use to put the pully back on? If its this much of a PITA to take off I can only immagine that putting it back on would be a PITA as well lol. at least I got the two drive belts replaced and learned a few tricks, but need to reschedule this for the next couple of weeks to get er done better.. Myabe I'll have my friend help me lol

yea, that I do remember...the bleading knuckles! It's a bit tight, you just have to use a bit of WD-40, and a bit of faith... Just keep saying, it will come off, it will come off! Thats the reason I ended up buying the correct puller...it's a #@$!! of a job!

On is much better. Once it breaks free,it will move right along. When going back on, I just used the bolt and a torque wrench.

How about using PB Blaster and a tap with a wooden block or something of that nature?

Talk about Bloody knuckles man! last time I had to back out cuz I didnt have the right puller, this time, the puller worked like a charm!! Putting Crankshaft pully back on was actually harder than taking it off,, needed to tap it with a hammmer a bit untill the bolt hit the crankshaft thread..
