Default stock head unit removal

hello to all,
i have an 04 intrepid and just recently changed the 6 by 9s in the rear deck because the old ones sounded as if they were blown. The new ones sound nicer but distort because the deck itself is pumping out distortion, it runs at at least 85 percent volume.. to 100 always with an awful distorted sound. Can someone please post instructions on how to remove the stock HU so i can replace it with an aftermarket one?

did you get the deck swapped out yet? if no, lemme know and i can walk you through it. you more than likely have a factory amp and that is the reason for the distortion.

first off, do you have sail speakers in the car? speakers in the front corner of the front door windows? if so, you have a factory amp and this is what is causing the distortion. if you can return the speakers, do so and save yourself the cost of a new head unit. you can then find some 2 ohm speakers that will be compatible with the factory amp.

OR

what parts are you referring to? are you planning on replacing the stock HU? you will still need to bypass the factory amp as that is what is causing distortion within your system. it's not that the amp is bad, but it is set up for factory speakers that run at 2 ohm. most after market speakers are 4 ohm and this is what is causing distortion at higher volumes.

so let me know if you are replacing everything or what and i can describe how to remove the factory deck.

to remove factory head unit:
--disconnect neg term jump post under hood (don't have to...)
--place key in "on" position in ignition
--set parking brake to prevent car from rolling
--shift from "P" to "N" or "D"
--pry up the plastic bezel surrounding the shift **** and ashtray. you don't have to remove this, simply raised up to get to the radio bezel in the next step. i just pry up and rotate a quarter turn so it is out of the way. this is held on by metal retaining clips so don't worry too much about breaking them.
--remove bezel surrounding radio and HVAC controls. if you have auto controls, be careful with HVAC wiring still attached to bezel. again, just metal clips holding down.
--remove 4 screws securing radio in and pull radio straight out.
--unclip radio wiring and antenna from back of radio.
--you are done

installation is simply the reverse.

you have a floor shifter correct? or is it a column shift? if you pm me your email address i can send pics. i have tried to post on here, but they require micro sized photos and i am not sure how.

otherwise, your floor shift **** has a plastic bezel that surrounds it. has the "clear" window for PDNR etc. that entire piece needs to be popped up. it snaps into the center just below your cup holder. you should be able to see a groove. get a flat blade screw driver and pop it up. you should be able to see how the rest comes up.

the bezel around the radio simply snaps out as well. start near the bottom by the ashtray and pull towards you. it will snap out and away.

if this isn't clear enough, i can snap some pics and send em to ya. just pm me.
