99' intrepid check engine light
Yes, change it first. The PCM can NOT sense fuel pressure status. If the pressure is low, it can fool the computer into thinking there is a misfire because the detection is done by the O2 sensors. That’s way an exhaust leak can also cause a false misfire.
The light itself can’t shut off the engine, only a malfunction (that the PCM is monitoring) can ;-) All kidding aside, I believe your “misfire” is erroneous because in your first post you said there were no misfire symptoms but seems to come on at aprox 3K RPM.
Fuel pressure is one of those things that can stall out your engine so start with the easiest…a fuel filter change. It may be a bad fuel pressure regulator or vacuum leak, but because you have no tools etc, this is a quick easy try.
I mentioned the MAP sensor only because it may be a coincidence and you actually have two unrelated malfunctions. It is an easy test if it is malfunctioning so I passed it on so we can eliminate it as a suspect (I have had several go out). The MAP is involved with engine timing and could cause a misfire but it would be a real misfire that you can feel.
That being said, are you sure there is no misfire present? Can you find a friend who knows what one feels like and have it confirmed? Otherwise we may be heading down the wrong rabbit trail.

I am pretty sure its not an actual misfire because it never skips, putters, or bogs down; only when it randomly shuts of does it "putter" briefly. I will definitely tackle the fuel filter this weekend then, shouldn't be too hard. I am beginning to understand that A LOT of different things can trip this code, :-/ thanks for the guidance.
Ill let you know how it goes

....Just another pattern i found when my car shuts off on me.. the past three times it has done it, its been very wet out, raining, or i go through a puddle THEN the car cuts out on me (happened again). I had the car running in my driveway and was spraying different spots of the engine with the hose and got the engine to cut out. so i know now that it is in fact "water" related... HELP?

Actually yes,(passenger side) i am pretty sure that i now know what my problem is. With the random shut offs and the misfire code...i believe it is my crankshaft position sensor that's bad...im going to replace it and see what happens..
thanks
thanks
