Default 99' intrepid check engine light

Recently my 99' with 129,995 miles has had the check engine light come on. I hooked up the scanner and got a "multiple cylinder misfire" code; But never felt sputtering or anything of the sort. i checked the coil packs and everything seemed dry and fine. i erased the code to see if the light would come on again and surely enough it came back. i repeated this for about 4 weeks and saw a pattern. it seems like it only comes on when the RPMs are up around 3000.

I don't know what the heck to do.

please help thanks!

Try running a good fuel injector cleaner first. Also an exhaust leak or low fuel pressure can cause this to trip with no actual misfire. Of course worn spark plugs and coils, or poor cylinder compression but multi items going out at once would be rare (not impossible though).

Have you pulled the plugs out and changed them before? If there are clean you can regap them and put them back in. That solved the problem i had with that code.

I swapped out the champion plugs and i am rolling with autolites now. i erased the codes today so I'll have to see if it triggers again, if they do maybe ill change the coils out i guess.

The only thing i have checked is spark plugs, and the exhaust leak is a no. I am only 17 so im still learning about all this, so i don't really know how to check if coils are bad so im gunna' go get 6 new coil packs out of the scrap yard and swap em'. As for fuel pressure i don't know about that either BUT my car has shut off on my while driving, and when i try to start it again it wants to crank over but just wont unless i leave in for 15 minutes, so maybe the fuel pump is kickin out or EGR valve is stuck open or whatever i have no clue im lost ??? also the low cylinder compression, i do NOT know if thats the case, once again i wouldnt know how to check but i DO know that its really bad haha. Again thanks for the help!

OK, I'd start with a fuel filter change and go from there.

Kurt

PS Next time the engine dies and will not restart try this, unplug your MAP sensor. This will cause an engine light, but the engine should be able to start right up. Be aware though, with the sensor unplugged, you will loose performance when you push the pedal...this trick can get you to a parts store though. The sensor is less than $50 and you can change it by hand. It screws into the intake manifold and has one electrical connector.

Let me know how it goes,

Kurt

Should i look into the fuel filter BEFORE i change coil packs? also would the misfire engine light have anything to do with the random engine shut off?
Thanks Kurt.
