Default need help on timming 2.7l tech to tech

hey my gf has a 01 2.7l intrepid, water pump took a crap actually caught in the act bearing blew out causing the most horribly designed water pump to dump coolant in the oil. i replaced water pump and install chain with timming marks, purge tensioner and rotated engine but tensioner did not hold up it was clogged. so now the timming is completley off with the cam and the crank i see the marks on the crank but the only thing u can go by on the cam is the sprocket marks dont see any marks on the cam secondary chain, so i install new tensioner, lined it up put the chain on following the procedure from alldata and started engine and runs for a split and dies out the timming is deff off, I need some pointers with this is the chain links suppose line up back again with the marks on the cam and crank, thanks i need advise from somebody thats done it before

thanks bill

send me a reply via my email @ dwad6@yahoo.com. I know what to do about your timing issue, but it requires a complete, detailed understanding.

You state that coolant is in oil. You may need an engine overhaul to make sure oil is not contaminated throughout the engine.

Did you get the service manual downloaded yet?

My water pump blew too, mine is a 2002 2.7L Dual Over Head Camshafts(DOHC)
I had to pull the engine out and rebuild it completely. because we suspected a leaky head gasket too. But same symptoms as you... As far as timing, I would download the PDF in the "holy Grail" thread. the thread is a moderators and its on the top of the 2nd generation intrepid list. its got all the goodies as far as engine work goes. torque specs, code meanings, everything. so download that and follow the instructions.

What I did, was just line up the gold plated chain links with the marks on the cam and crank sprockets.

the crank sprocket lines up with an arrow engraved in the block and the camshaft sprocket dots should be perpendicular to the flat side of the heads... its all in the PDF.

its hard to tell Top Dead Center (TDC) on exhaust stroke because the view from the exhaust port is directly at the valve... but if you rotate a little bit more you can see that the intake is just opening... meaning the exhaust stroke was just at TDC.

so when the intake is opening, the piston should be moving downward. and you should be close to TDC requirments... as long as the timing marks were aligned when chain was installed.

P.S. in that last picture, the timing looks good on the crank. you got the gold plated link lined up with the dot and arrow.
