2.7 l 98-04 engine knocking - How did you fix it? (if you did)
I'm new to the forum and sorry if this has been posted previously but I'd like to know what everyone has done to kill the knocking sound before the engine decides to seize up and die. My 98 Intrepid is at 94000 miles and has had a tune-up previously. Here's what I did so far for under $100 when I FIRST heard the infamous knocking:
-Replaced the PCV Valve. ($3.79) Knocking still persistant but a little bit less noticeable. Easy replacement too.
-Replaced the Air Filter that's NEVER been replaced. ($10.00 Basic Filter) Knocking still there but I felt a little more power out of her.
-Changed the coolant. ($10.00 Prestone Long Life) Its still there but it will help other parts that coexist with the engine also.
-Cleaned the fuel system. ($3.99 Gumout Fuel System Cleaner) Most noticeable change. The engine is beginning to sound and feel a lot better.
-Switched oil over to synthetic. ($20.50 5W-30 Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5Q, $9.00 Bosch Premium Oil Filter, $11.00 36oz Lucas Oil Treatment, used half) YEAH! Finally GONE! (I hope)
Cost me $73.06 - thanks Walmart! (w/tax) Albeit, I've only been driving the car a couple hundred miles since I've tried to save my engine, everything I tried so far has helped immensely. Helps that I caught it early too. Am I missing something or am I just delaying the innevitable destruction of my poor engine? I'm poor as hell right now so anything else I can do myself would help a lot. Thanks!

Your engine knocking could be coming from a bearing that is either worn or misaligned when installed. Yes, the change to a synthetic oil can greatly reduce this; however, there should be no knocking regardless of the type of oil you use. If the knocking is heard again, and it is heard from under the engine, then suspect the bearing. Hope this helps and I hope your problem is resolved in the type of fix you performed.
