need help bad
hi i have a 2003 dodge intrepid sxt with the 3.5, every once in a while you can drive it and shut if off and it wont restart, the motor cranks and it seems like it losing fuel or fire, after sitting for about 2-3 hours it will fire right up like a new car, and it might not do it again for like 3 months or could be the next day, its got a new cam sensor already on it, any help would be greatly aprreciated with this problem and there is no engine light on
That's how mi e was when the map sensor went bad. It can get stuck at a value and the. Slowly release over time. Then it's fine until it sticks again. If it's your problem, it can be unplugged after it malfnctions and you should be ae to start right up. You can drive it like this, but only limmited rpm as your timing will be set to a middle range with a default value from the computer to replace the missing map sensor value (called limp home mode). With it disconnected, you will also get an engine light.
This is one way to verify your problem (the disconnect method). Another would be to keep a scan tool in the car that has real time monitoring and when it fails, look at the value from the map. If it's not moving, then you know.
Other possible problems include stuck/sticking egr, intermittant loss of fuel pressure, intermittant loss of of spark. I'd lean toward the map because I have had to replace three over the past years on my 97. The first time it happned to me, I drove around with a fuel pressure gauage taped to the windshield hoping for it to malfunction for hours.
The map screws into the side of the intake manifold (driver side). It had one plug and can be unscrewed by hand.
