BEST is the correct weight 5w30, and the BEST type is pure synthetic and the BEST brand is Shaffer, Mobil 1, Amsoil or Wolf's head.

Modern syn oils stand up to heat much better than dino oil, that's why you can get away with using a lower weight, plus it may give you a slight increase in mpg....

This engine is known to be prone to sludge. Regardless of what oil is used, the manufactures change schedule should be followed.
A synthetic will give you a better chance at not having a sludge issue - but this engine is of such bad design that not even Ams is recommending extended oil drain intervals.

It's interesting to note that other car companies that have had troublesome engines (Toyota, Volks, Saab, etc.) have all extended the warranties on their engines while the cheapo's here are doing it on a "case by case" basis - read "you better have every single oil change documented and don't even think of going over the recommended mileage by 1."

<rant on>
Ever notice how some companies (not just auto) stand behind their products and others look for any and all excuses to avoid any responsibility.
<rant off>

I've been using 10W30 Mobil 1 with the more expensive Mobil filter or similar every 5000 miles for the last 154,000 miles. Engine still running well.

This is the first time I have ever heard of our brand of engine oil considered with Mobile1. We (Amalie Oil) acquired the brand from S.O.P.U.S (Shell/Pennzoil) a couple years ago. Just neat that the brand came up here at one point in time.
