I am about 95% sure its transmission solenoid issue. Same problem happened to me I've been researching it all day and here is what I can tell you.

This is for error code P700

The reason your car probably dies is because it is trying to recover from Limp Mode. So when it dies (or you turn it off) it resets everything and you're fine. For me, I noticed it has problems shifting once it is in limp mode.

Facts that I've found.
  • 2.7 engine you do NOT need to crack transmission to replace the solenoid pack
  • You need to remove the Transmission pan
  • You need to remove the valve body (17 bolts)
  • Also recommended you replace water pump ever 75,000 miles to avoid engine failure from oil sludge which is a HUGE problem with these cars =\ sigh

Locally the transmission solenoid pack is $185.99 at O'riley auto parts which is where I found to have the cheapest part.

I am about ready to perform this surgery on my car Monday so we'll see how it goes. If you're someone who is going to do it yourself I've been told it can take about 3 hours. As for me, I know a mechanic with power tools and air tools to help the process go a little smoother.
Another thing you may want to consider

Good luck.

Alexcf...let me try to save you a few $$. A PO700 means the TCM detected a fault. If you have the TCM scanned, it will help you isolate your fault. It may be as cheap as a speed input or output sensor. They are external to the transmission and both will cost less than $100 together.

As for this original post, his is not a transmission malfnction...its an idling fault.
