Default Trans problems.

Hi Guys: Been a member since around 05. Car is a 2000 Intrepid with 88000 miles. While driving home this evening at about 55 mph, the speedometer dropped to 0. When coming to a stop, it downshifted very hard. When I went to take off again, the trans was slipping and then it would not shift out of 1st. Next, the engine light came on. Well, I got her home. When at idle, it will shift into reverse and drive, (barely) and while holding my foot on the brake, in reverse or drive, it will just rev up and barely want to move. Fluid is full and smells good.
Any thoughts?? Thanks,Kevin

Thanks for all the replies. If anyone else wants to know, it was the output speed sensor.

Congrats, in less than 24hrs you got it figured out. How did you determine that was the problem?

Your part about the trans slipping is WAY more serious than a sensor.

Just Ask.com. Talked with a ASE certified Dodge tech. It was $18.00 to get an answer. As far as the trans "feeling" like it was slipping and revving to 2500 rpm with the brake applied, It was actually stuck in 2nd gear. He said the output speed sensor runs the speedometer and various other computer related shifting things. Anyways, part was $26.00 with tax and about 15 minutes to replace it. Everything now works, and it shifts fine.

That'll happen alot. I asked a question once and I had the problem fixed before I got a response. I have also had responses that will come from left field and end up having nothing to do with the problem. Just a suggestion, if you dont get a response within 24 hours go to Autozone for a free diagnostic test. It's quicker and they will tell you what is exactly wrong (only do so for mechanical problems). If you have questons about the body then those can be answered easily by anyone. For instance I asked about removing my fenders and wheel wells and I was able to remove them from the car in the junkyard and put them on my own in about a total of 4 hours! The next day I went to Autozone to get my engine issue diagnosed and I replaced that part (CPS) within the hour!
