Default 2.7 Sludge - Cam Section

Hi,
Just a "for-what-its-worth" post from a new guy here. First, a million thanks to whoever posted the 2.7 - 3.5 full .pdf manual. It is 152 pages packed full of really helpful stuff.

Anyway, I am in the process of replacing an engine in an '02 Intrepid. My daughter ran it out of oil after accidentally puncturing the oil filter. After 4 miles of driving, it "just quit" (really).

I picked one up from a salvage yard with 118,000K for $1300.00. It ran, but I thought with that many miles I would change the water pump since they are so easy to do!. Well, my gut sank when I got the valve cover off and learned first hand what all the talk about sludge was with these engines.

As I began taking it apart, I discovered the small oil holes that are next to the lash adjusters. With these plugged, it is easy to see what happens to the lobes on the cam when these holes are plugged solid. I took the heads off and began cleaning all of the bores. I can see now how vulnerable these engines are if you use crappy oil, or let it go as long as the owner of this car did.

Well, thanks for putting up with my history lesson. I am grateful to those who have posted great advise on this site. I stumbled across it by accident, but will definitely be making a contribution to the site.
Later,

GMBEN
