1998 intrepid
I need to know if anyone can give me any ideas, i have a 1998 intrepid, we replaced the water pump, belts, hoses, radiator, idler pully, inspected the chain, guides, it was put back together and ran great, then the fuel pump went so they say, then they say the camshaft sensor was bad (after putting it on the computer) so they replaced it. when my daughter picked it up it was knocking, shedidn't make it home,& it went back on the tow truck and they now tell me they a rod is knocking. is it possible the sensor isn't adjusted correctly or has it now ruined my engine? the place didn't even have permission to do any of that only the fuel pump. can anyone give me any ideas?
I have a 1998 Intrepid im no mechanic...... my rod is knocking (3rd engine in car !) this is common in these type of cars . Now that ive been threw hell with this car i can leave you with some advice!
1. Call around and see if you can get a estimate on how much to rebuild engine. and how long its guarnteed.
2. Ask how much it would be to do a engine swamp. (get engine estimates from salvage yard)
If you put another 2.7 in this vehicle trade it offor sell!now if you want to keep it upgrade to a
3.2 or 3.5 (1998-2001) or check internet prices on a remanufactured 2.7 engine.

From 1998-2001 2.7 engines failed but from 2002-2004 the problem was solved however from what i understand you cant put a 02-04 engine in because the computer system is different. Dont even ask what engine i put in because its the 3rd the car has had and it still isnt working:
2.7 went bad with 123k on it so put a 3.2 in it turns out itwas bad it knocked and causedcar to overheat (which i think i just got a bad engine that time on accident) now i have a knocking 2.7 in and the car remains in the driveway because it has a knock to it... If i had the funds id try another 3.2 engine but it gets to cost a little bit more because the accessories have to be changed such as alternator, starter, air intake manifold, throttle cable, exhaust manifold, and powersteering pump. The 2.7 engine is difficult to diagnose i had mine in the shop and they unplugged the cam shaft sensor and the car started when they turned the key, which spooked the hell out of them because it wasnt suppose to. You've lost quite a bit of money in this car so myadvice would be switch to a 3.2 engine (under 90,000 miles if you want to keep it) other wise if you have the 2.7 fixed or replaced put a for sale sign on it! Sorry my advice is not so great but its because this is the most difficult car to keep rolling.

Anyway if you have a rod knocking the motor is caput. A 2.7, especially a 98 is going to be a money pit. If you want honest advice your best decision is to sell the car as is and cut your losses. Now if you really want to save the car there is plenty of information on 3.2/3.5 swaps. They are fairly simple however the car will need new PCM, wiring harness, alternator, refrigerant system and so on. It can be quite costly as well. However if you want to go that route come on back and let us know whats up.
mdjohnson maybe you didnt understand what i was answering to because their question went directly to my e-mail account its not posted here. so be so quick to jump to conclusions and you didnt tell them anything they hadnt already learned and if you think you can next time you be the first to reply to all the dodge intrepid forums
