As an auto its going to be slow period. Swapping to an manual transaxle would do wonders, but I am assuming your girlfrined wouldn't like that idea. You can try a few things like the CAI, UDP and a better flowing muffler to get her going.

Well I have an 05 sohc auto, and its slow but, not too bad. Only engine mods I have are a cheap cold air intake from ebay, 50$ shipped. It works great, sounds great, and gave me some much needed power.

Oh, I didn't think you wanted to get your hands dirty. You can swap in a Magnum cam and springs and have the head ported and polished or do a Magnum head swap with the magnum exhaust manifold.

The MSD coil won't help performance wise at all. The MSD is a stock coil pack painted red (looks better than stock). The wires won't help performance either, but may help smooth out the idle. I prefer Magnecor's myself.

Well, if your looking for best bang for your buck:

I would do a good P&P, camshaft, valve springs, followed by a turbo with a decent exhaust system.

That would be putting out more power than an SRT-4 (if everything else is running well to start with).

A nice hahn turbo setup would be just as nice as your 96 turbed neon for her . hahn turbo is the nicest turbo for an automatic and great for a 02 and I have a hahn turbo in my 96 auto and very nice . I also have a auto 04 sxt with medium mods fast enough for me mostly setup for shows. maybe thats what she should get into.
