If I was in your position I would just buy the parts from the 2002. The 1st Gen transmission is going to ahve a cable clutch setup (you would have to drill holes for the cables in your firewall), and be non-modular, and more then likely it will have A TON of mileage. Go for the 2002...

Default 1996/1998 into a 2003

sorry for the new post but the old is a few pages back.....
anyways i found a 1996 or 1998 full neon for $500(96) or $700(98) both with good motor and manuel trannys (but high miles i belive). Will one of thies tranny work in my 2003?
And as for the interior parts, shifter/consul will all that work?
I know i will need a computer from my year.

My only other option is from a 2002 for $900 with only 5100 miles, but they take all the parts out and then i come get them..... i am just worried that they will leave something out. Or some stupidteenagers will be tearing the parts out and drop bolts, small parts and stuff like that and then i have no idea how to put it all back in...........
Any Idea's?!?!?!?!?!?

****sorry i forgot to say i just need the Tranny!!!

ok, i got the girl to go to 500 for the 98, wich is much more affordable for me, and i sick of not having my neon...(driving a 91 chevy blazer that is a rust bucket and death trap)

so the only problem i would have is drilling holes for the cable, the computer, and it a non-moduler cluch..... (what is modular or non modular)..... but as far as bolting up and fitting i would be fine correct???

also cant i use a few other motor parts to boost my performance??? Like the pistons and head?

but you can just use the your tranny and your acceries(2gn). the only pain is gonna be the wiring harnesses because you are gonna need every single one engine + body + engine bay+ dash from pre ngc 2gn.

also the the only difference between the the modular and non modular is that the modular can't be taken apart the clutch and flywheel is one piece. where with the non it can be and when instaling it you need too align it.

So the non modular is not a bad thing... correct?

sorry i forgot to say... i really only need the tranny.... motor in my car is new.... just figured if i take the tranny what else can i use.

you can use the tranny from the 98 but the easy way too do it would be too swap the belhousings then you can use hydrolic clutch setup.
I can make you list of what you have too use from the 2gn and what will work from the first gen
but it will be tonight luch is over and got too do some work[:'(]
may I ask why you doing this

first, my tranny is dead.... wont shift out of second and this is my 3rd ATX and im sick of them i want an ATX.
I found a good deal on a 98 so i think that is the cheapist easyist way to go.

If i switched the bell housing i would need all the cluch stuff from another 01+ neon correct? I am trying to avoind 10 trips to the junk yard.. i can get this whole running 98 for $500. Then i can see where are the parts are and i know they are all thier!

ok so you only realy want too swap the tranny your 03motor is fine? because too swap in the 98 is gonna be a pain and can get pricy. since with first gen wiring I don't think the the cluster will work. if you just swap the tranny it should work not sure if the cable for the clutch will work but you can get one out of a 2000 they were the only 2gn with the cable clutch.

the pistins will fit and should bump up your comp ratio
as for the head it will fit but not many if any poeple has done it and the ones who did don't like too talk about it (gary howell)
